Just for clarification-

My original problem with Xubuntu was no matter what I did to xorg.conf, I could not get my display to do 1440x990. I switched to Mepis 6.0 and it made 1440x990 the default resolution with no tinkering. I installed XFce with some problems (see above) but at least I had the right resolution. I then saved the xorg.conf from the Mepis install and used it when I reinstalled Xubuntu. Thanks to all who helped, especially SimonJ for his idea of using the Mepis created xorg.conf file.

*** I think that XFCE is missing some sort of module or configuration so it will recognise the 1440x990 mode . KDE obviously gets it right. ***

I didn't think of that but I will do it. Before I scrapped Xubuntu in favor of Mepis I went so far as to delete every resolution except for the 1440x990 that I added manually. The SR then went to 1600x1200, which didn't exist in the xorg.conf file. :-x

This may be too late, but back up your working xorg.conf before installing Xubuntu. Then just overwrite the new one with the back up and you should get the same screen (drivers permitting) as you do now.

Looks like the repos have this, as this is what I installed (From about XFce)

Xfce 4 Desktop Environment
version 4.3.90.2 (Xfce 4.4 BETA1)

I tried xftaskbar4 and got command not found, xfce4-panel -a returns xfce4-panel not running. Sounds like I need to find and install that package.

Edit: No package that is anything like xfce4-panel is in the repos. I see now that Mepis 6 uses Dapper repos, not Edgy repos. I might be going about this the wrong way. The reason I dumped Xubuntu Edgy in the first place is because it doesn't support 1440x990 but Mepis 6 does. I think I'll reinstall xubuntu and try to get that resolution to work for a second time.

Thank you for the help.

:? I had Xubuntu Egdy on my system for a few days but couldn't get the screen resolution right. During that time I found I really liked XFce so I installed MEPIS and grabbed XFce from the repos. Mepis 6.0 does get the screen resolution right for both KDE and Xfce.

My only problem with XFce with MEPIS is that the task bars at the top and bottom of the screen won't work. I can middle click the desktop and can see the minimised apps fine. Right clicking the desktop and clicking on Settings then Panel does nothing so maybe something isn't installed? Since Mepis uses the Ubuntu repos, I should have the same files as XFce in Xubuntu

I did a search on these forums for an answer but didn't see one. Any help will be appreciated.
