Maybe enabling acceleration (dri probably) in Xorg with XRender support (xfwm4 -V) will improve the render speed (if you haven't done this already...).

(I don't use shadows since they seem to have a noticeable effect on performance.)

I have the compositor, but am not using a special video card, just the Intel 915 card in my ThinkPad.   Using Ubuntu Edgy.
