Sure you can, with gnomevfs or compile goffice without vfs. But you cannot compile thunar using gnome-vfs, but both vfs' work perfectly on one system.

So you mean I can not use goffice or something under debian + xfce?

Thunar can work with fam too, just choose between fam or gamin. And thunar has its own vfs (named thunar-vfs), so you can't use gnome vfs.

Libgnomevfs needs fam, while thunar needs gamin.
And fam conflicts with gamin in debian's packages.
