I have a similar problem. When I remove xfce4-settings-helper from the automatically started tasks during startup, it makes a difference of 6 seconds in startup time on my system, and even 20 seconds on my virtual guest system in VirtualBox.

I have the recent Ubuntu 9.04 mini.iso installed and then both the tasks "xfce4" and "lxde". It is Xfce version 4.6.0 and the task "xfce4" gets me a relatively clean Xfce install, without all the dependencies the "xubuntu-desktop" task pulls in. I wanted to compare the total startup times of Xfce and Lxde. Without xfce4-settings-helper they are very similar, but with xfce4-settings-helper Xfce starts up much slower than Lxde.

I have a new arch build with xfce4.6 fresh install. Most things are working fine, however it seems like the splash screens go through the settings, but it stays on starting xfce-settings-helper for about 30 seconds...Much longer than the others..Not sure if this is normal or if there is something I can do to speed this up?

While this is happening, I can still click any menu or open any app.
