Kde-4-mixer gives me a capture tab with volume sliders and under the sliders is a button that toggles between red and gray. I guess red means the mike is live because it's lit and gray means it's off becuse it's not lit. But it could be that red means off because red='stop' and gray is on because on is the normal state. I can't find anything that explicitly tells me and when I'm trouble-shooting it's nice to eliminate as many variables as possible.
