I was a Gnome user. I use debian. the reason I first found XFCE was that after some days with Gnome 3 and hearing what its developers had to say, I just disappointed in Gnome. I like beauty and I like to have a nice desktop. but Gnome 3  is a mess!!! its usless and it slows down the user. KDE? not for me(better than Gnome 3 anyway).
finally I tried XFCE 4. and... . I think it is beautiful functional and user friendly. this is how I found my new desktop.
