Add plugins in /usr/local/share to the panel

I installed some panel plugins from source, but the panel doesn't list them, when I try to add a new item. There's stuff there, and it's in what I think is the correct ENV variable. Am I missing something? I've tried running xfce4-panel -r and even logging out entirely and starting a new session.
