xfwm4 issue

Bonjour,

I am facing a problem with xfwm4: sometimes, when I login, xfwm4 is not active and I have to start it "by hand".

In .xsession-errors file I have this message:

(xfce4-session:5124): xfce4-session-WARNING **: gpg-agent returned no PID in the variables
xfwm4-Message: Another Window Manager (unknown) is already running on screen :0.0
xfwm4-Message: To replace the current window manager, try "--replace"

(even if the window manager succeeded to start)

What does it mean? How to get an every time working session?

I have only xfce4 installed on this machine, and no other window manager....

Thank you for helping.

Re: xfwm4 issue

Is your system trying to start xfwm4 twice?
Do you have it listed in your Application Startup (Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart).

Try clearing your saved sessions cache (Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Session > Clear saved sessions).

Do you have it listed in your Application Startup (Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart).

There are only:

xfce4-panel
xfwm4
Xfsettingsd
xfdesktop

The .config/autostart directory has only one file: xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop
which contains:

[Desktop Entry]
Hidden=false

No change after that.

Re: xfwm4 issue

Which distro and which version of Xfce are you running?

How are you starting Xfce? Display manager or via command line?

Re: xfwm4 issue

Can you remove "xfce4-panel", "xfwm4", and "xfdesktop" from your Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart list and clear your session cache one more time. Then log out and back in again and test.

If it's still a problem, post back your ~/.xsession-errors log file.

So I had to start xfwm4 and xfce4-panel from cli.... and message is still there.

Re: xfwm4 issue

There must be another window manager starting. What do the following commands return:

ls ~/.config/autostart
ls /etc/xdg/autostart

Also try clearing your sessions cache like this:
- log out
- from the log in screen, press Ctrl+Alt+F1
- log in to the text console
- run the following commands:

cd .cache
rm -rf sessions

- return to the gui login screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7
- login.

Ok this seems to fix the problem: no more message about an unknown window manager in .xsession-errors

Thank you. I let you know if xfwm4 fails to start again at login (this behaviour is uncertain!)
