Graphics Drivers Failure

Hello smile

This is a weird issue, really not related to XFCE, but I am hopping for some nice folks here to have ideas. I've been trying a lot of things from online resource, no luck so far.
I have two computers, one with a nVidia 970 and the other one with a 940. Both were running the proprietary driver fine (And I was able to switch between the Intel adapter and the nVidia one using the "nVidia Settings" application), but since recently (Kernel update?) the nVidia driver is not working anymore.

After seleting my flavor using Grub, the system boots (I see the services starting etc), but lightdm doesn't display, and I see a black screen with a non-blinking cursor on the top left.

I have tried many things, including trying with a 367, 375, 378 version, trying from the graphics/ppa repo, tried also the nVidia official installer. Nothing worked.
But right now I've noticed something. In `/etc/X11/xorg.conf` there are two layouts defined, one using a screen on nVidia and the other one using another screen on Intel. The adapter are switched by making one inactive apparently. Well if I make nVidia inactive and restart lightdm it works.

My main problem is that I really don't know what exactly is failing, I'm not sure if I installed a package that shouldn't be there, or if the combination of the kernel and the nVidia drivers is bad. I don't know what log to look for, the /var/log/Xorg.0.log? What am I looking for exactly? I've noticed a few EE when using the nVidia driver about a screen directive being deleted (but no xorg.conf exists for me to check anything):

Any clue?

Re: Graphics Drivers Failure

Strange, no (EE) in your printout.

Maybe try to rename xorg.conf to xorg.conf.bak and do a restart. Forcing a new xorg.conf to be generated.

Re: Graphics Drivers Failure

@k-3.14 thank you for your help!

I don't think this is too much relevant. I've already tested with and without the file. Also, the issue shows on two computers. A more detailed description of the problem is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1669469

I noticed a weird code "!!! Unknown header type 7f" when doing a lspci. Also I've noticed unusual behavior from Compton even when running on the intel chip.

Really the problem boils down to:
- prime-select intel, reboot, ok.
- prime-select nvidia, reboot, black screen.

Where do you usually find logs for this?

Re: Graphics Drivers Failure

In case of dual gpu systems, you need to install bumblebee drivers. Here are some references,

Re: Graphics Drivers Failure

@Sloth thanks.

I highly doubt that. It worked fine before, and I never used bumblebee for a good reason: I don't want offscreen rendering of windowed regions. Bumblebee is for selective "per-application" GPU based rendering (And this comes at a cost also). Bumblebee addresses a very different need than the one I describe here (prime, not primus).

Any Xorg power-user around? big_smile

Doodloo.
