How to make xubuntu 16.04 wallpaper look for image inside sub folder

I use Xubuntu 16.04. I categorized my wallpaper in different folder. But it won't look for the image inside the sub folder. How do I do it without mixing the image into one folder or extra app(for lightweight sake).

With xfdesktop, you can not use multiple folders as sources. It will only read from one folder.

Option 1
However, xfdesktop will monitor your source background image and if it changes, will update the background. So you could script something to overwrite the source background image with another file and it will update the background.

As an example, copy an image to your home folder and rename it to something generic like "background.jpg". Then right-click the file in Thunar and select "Set as Wallpaper".

Now, copy another jpg image file to background.jpg overwriting it. Eg:

cp ~/Pictures/Mountain.jpg ~/background.jpg

...and the desktop should refresh with the new image.

Using this basic concept, you can write a script that selects image from any number of sources and overwrites background.jpg to refresh the background.

graysky2 has written such a script (background-randomizer) that works in this manner. It has a configuration option in it's conf file to specify maximum directory depth to allow for recursive processing of background images.

Option 2
Another option would be to create a holder directory and symlink the image files of various locations into this folder, then use this folder in xfdesktop's properties.

Re: How to make xubuntu 16.04 wallpaper look for image inside sub folder

I'm not sure I understand what you are looking for, especially in the second post, but maybe this:

  • right-click the desktop > Desktop Settings ..

  • click on the pull-down menu next to the word Folder and select "Other" at the bottom of the list

  • navigate to the folder where you keep your wallpapers and click Open

I think Xfce Desktop will retain that location. Note that you are selecting a folder, not a picture, with that menu.

Simple, lightweight solution: Set a folder and link any images there, from anywhere.

No extra copies, no extra app, no scripts. Did I miss anything?

Thanks guys, but I think theses things are too complicate for a simple task. Symbolic link will break if there are duplicated files. Please take this as a feature request.
