How to assign icons to apps in the panel

Hello, I am new to XFCE from Win10.  I have assigned a icon set but some of the icons I do not like.

I have tried several icon sets and some have icons I like and some do not.

How can I grab icons from other sets and assign them individually on the panel?

Also, how can I grab icons from Windows apps and then use them for the panel?  Thanks.

Re: How to assign icons to apps in the panel

My guess is you need to find your icon set in /usr/share/icons/ and manually replace graphics files for a chosen icon.

A couple of options are discussed here.

Re: How to assign icons to apps in the panel

Ok, I read the thread and am creating my own icon theme which inherits the icons I currently use.

Now, I went to the directory with the alternative icons I want to put in my custom set, but how do I see the individual icons for apps?  For example I grepped for firefox and thunderbird in the icon folder but got no results.  Not sure how to find them and get them out and over to my set.  Thanks.

Re: How to assign icons to apps in the panel

You can use the "locate" command to find files:

locate -i firefox | grep icons

...or open Thunar to /usr/share/icons and browse.

A combination of both will be most helpful.

Re: How to assign icons to apps in the panel

Thanks that is starting to help.  locate -i firefox | grep icons only returned results for /usr/share/icons/hicolor/, /usr/share/icons/Papirus/ and /usr/share/icons/HighContrast.

Since my icon set is not one of those how is the firefox icon being set?

Re: How to assign icons to apps in the panel

hicolor is the default icon theme if the icon is not found anywhere. I'm assuming it's using that icon?

BTW, which icon are you referring to? The launcher/menu icon or the window icon?

The launcher/menu icons are the ones Iḿ looking for.  Thanks for the tip about hicolor icons being default!

Re: How to assign icons to apps in the panel

Ok, I finally moved an icon into my set.

Found the icon in another set and moved all the relevant sizes, 22x22, 24x24, etc to the current icon set.

Then I refreshed the icon cache "sudo update-icon-caches /usr/share/icons/*" and restarted the panel "xfce4-panel -r"

Now I have the icon I want.  Also noticed that if icons weren't found in hicolor or current set, they seem to pull from "/usr/share/app-install/icons"  as that was the only other place the thunderbird icon was found as it's not in hicolor or my current set.

Thanks for the help!

*Edit*  Found another anomaly.  I have the firestorm viewer installed and cannot find any icons for it in "/usr/share" but there are icons in the installation directory.  Not sure how it is finding its way into the icon cache for the panel but it's there.  Any ideas about how it gets there?
