Cannot edit menu, help!!

Hi everybody,

I've been using xcfe for the last couple of days on ubuntu and I've been converted. Very impressed with it so far, its light but not lacking.  But there's one niggling problem. I can't edit the main menu. I've been scouring the net for the last 2 days trying to find a method that works but no luck. I've tried sticking in a .desktop file in "usr/share/applications" as detailed here - http://forum.xfce.org/index.php?topic=2658.0    but it doesn't seem to work. Here's an entry I'm trying to make for songbird :

 [Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Songbird
GenericName=Songbird
Comment=Media Player
Exec= /home/taki/Songbird/Songbird
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/songbird.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Multimedia;

Am I doing something wrong there? Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Cannot edit menu, help!!

Hi,

Maybe a stupid question, but your .desktop file is named /usr/share/applications/.desktop or /usr/share/applications/[name of the appl].desktop?

Re: Cannot edit menu, help!!

I just figured this out today on Zenwalk 4.6.1 and this is the way I added a menu item.

Log in root

Search for the application you want in menu
Right click the application file and select "Send To" and select "Desktop (create Link)"
Go to Desktop shortcut on your Desktop and right click than select "Desktop" and click on "Create Laucher"
Fill in Name, Command and what icon you want to use than click "Create"
Move this newly created file to /usr/share/applications
Right click on file and select "Open With" select Geany or Mousepad.
Edit the Categories line and add where you want the menu item to be.

example: Categories=Application;Settings;

The above example would put the item in the Settings menu.

Might be the roundabout way to do it but works.
