Applications > Settings > Display, resolution

Hello Xfce world. smile

I'm using Xubuntu 9.04, therefore Xfce version 4.6.0.  Please help me to get the display resolution on an old Dell Inspiron 4000 properly adjusted.  The display is capable of 1024x768 resolution with 24 bit color and a 70 Hz refresh rate but both xrandr and Applications > Settings > Display report an 800x600 resolution at 60 Hz.  (The screen is rather fuzzy and hard on the eyes after awhile, but it's completely occupied by the Xfce desktop and I thought this area would be smaller if the resolution is really 800x600.)

lspci says:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x (rev 02)

Here's the output of xrandr:

Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600 60.0* 56.0
   640x480 60.0

Here's the contents of xorg.conf after I restored it with dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg:

Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier    "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier    "Default Screen"
    Monitor        "Configured Monitor"
    Device        "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

That's not very informative.

Also, this machine is to be passed along to a friend who's a complete newbie, so I'd like to get the Applications > Settings > Display gui capable of switching to 1024x768 at 70 Hz.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Cheers.

Re: Applications > Settings > Display, resolution

O.K. folks.  I found the solution to the problem.  I may have been wrong about the 70 Hz refresh rate though; it's still stuck at 60 but it looks fine.
