Xfce 4.8?

The posted release schedule (http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.8/schedule) suggests that a final version of 4.8 will be available next month, but the 'roadmap' pages for various components haven't been updated for a long time. Any news from non-Web sources on what might be happening with the project?

I'm not personally anxious about this, just curious. Xfce 4.6 works beautifully for me and I have zero complaints about it. I might be moving in future from Linux Mint Helena Xfce CE to Debian's next stable release, and that's likely to have 4.6 (Lenny had 4.4).

Perhaps, you should 'subscribe' to the Xfce Mailinglist.

I get emails daily on everything Xfce related ... from FAQ to Development.

Re: Xfce 4.8?

I agree with gnome_refuge.  It would be nice to know.  However, I'd like to see the web site kept up to date with this info; at least in a ball-park time frame.  (But we've got to remember that it is always tough for programmers to be sure of anything until the last minute.  Problems pop up all the time.  "The best laid plans...." and all that. smile)

Hi, vrkalak.

Yes, you'll notice I put that URL in my original post. My question was whether anyone had heard anything recently. Release Manager Jannis Pohlmann's last blog on 4.8 (http://gezeiten.org/) in January wasn't all good news.

Re: Xfce 4.8?

I may be wrong, but usually other projects such as KDE or Gnome are showing mockups or are leaving their projects. Xfce Why not do the same? Is there no major changes in the interface version 4.8? Do you have any estimated date for the launch of this version?

Sometimes I feel that this excellent project is gradually being forgotten.

Were there many 'major UI changes' between versions 4.4 and 4.6? 4.2 and 4.4? The most radical user-visible change in the entire 4.x series was xfce4-panel. Before that, it was the jump to Gtk+ 2.0. If you're expecting big developments, prepare to be disappointed. Most of the work in Xfce goes towards more behind-the-scenes stuff: xfconf was probably the most radical overhaul with 4.6. Thunar's jump to GIO/GFS and the depreciation of HAL in xfconf will probably be the biggest development for 4.8. That's assuming Xfce doesn't completely transition to Gtk+ 3.0 in the 4.8 release cycle.

Last I checked, Xfce has a pretty healthy chunk of the *nix desktop pie. That's not going anywhere, any time soon. Nor does development seem to have stalled.

Re: Xfce 4.8?

I just checked out the schedule and noted that the dependency freeze was over a year ago.  I also noted that there were dependency changes after that, and in fact that was the last news item.  :?   Could you please explain why the word "freeze" is used incorrectly here?  It is confusing to people wanting to know the progress.  Thanks.
