Startup (xmodmap) and unwanted applications.

I'm using Helena - Community Edition, 32-bit.
I would prefer the following:
No application to start up on login, I just want to see my desktop.
Example:
Xfce Control Center->Adminstration->Session and Startup
Set Automatically Save Session on Logout Off
Doesn't seem to do it.
When I restart, firefox and xfce-terminal are started.
I don't want them started automatically.

What I do want to start automatically are my keymappings.
I have a script file for xmodmap call .keymap in my home directory.
I put the following:

xmodmap /home/tim/.keymap

in /etc/profile,
but when I log in, I get incomplete mapping results.
Pointers to documentation would be appreciated as well as advice.
thanks
tim

Re: Startup (xmodmap) and unwanted applications.

 I just realized that I posted this to the Xfce forum and I
meant to post to the Mint Xfce forum. Oh well! Let's see
that you good folks can come up with before I risk getting
accused of cross-posting.
cheers

Re: Startup (xmodmap) and unwanted applications.

In Mint 8 Xfce, if you shut down or restart with the 'Save session for future logins' NOT ticked, then no applications should open automatically when you log in again.

Here's another way. It looks like you found the Session and Startup dialog, and on the General tab you've left 'Automatically save session on logout' unticked. If you go to the Session tab you'll find that the Restart style for Firefox is 'If running', meaning it will restart when you save the session, unless you shut it down before logging out.

If you double-click on that 'If running', a dropbox appears with the choices 'If running', 'Always', 'Immediately' and 'Never'. Choose 'Never'. Cool, yes?

Not sure about your 'xmodmap' problem. If it was a script, you could add it to the Application Autostart list.

Re: Startup (xmodmap) and unwanted applications.

This Ubuntu thread

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=325688

suggests making the xmodmap command a text file, making the file executable, and just adding it to your startup programs.

Re: Startup (xmodmap) and unwanted applications.

OK, here's what I see happening:
I was not able to launch the keymapping with .xmodmaprc approach.
BTW: It seems kind of string to make .xmodmaprc executable (to me anyway)
What I did do was to write a little executable script and add it to the startup applications,
and that works.

NOTE: In redhat, slackware and older versions of kubuntu, just putting

xmodmap input-script

in the user .bash_profile was all that was needed. I didn't try that ....

As for the applications starting up, I was able to eliminate firefox as per gnome_refugee's instructions,
but xfce-terminal persists in loading at startup and I did not even see it as an item for restart style.

thanks again

That's very interesting, and I just confirmed it. xfce-terminal doesn't show up as a running process in the Session tab. Why not? (...hoping someone has an answer...)

Re: Startup (xmodmap) and unwanted applications.

And furthermore, I'm finding that the keymapping is just not working correctly.
Same code as on ubuntu partition, but it appears that the xmodmap script is
being only partially executed. I'm looking through the logs (/var/log) and haven't
found anything illuminative. Frankly, the startup applications aren't as important
as the keymapping. Keymapping failure wouldn't be a deal breaker for a client,
but it would be for me. And this could be related to the video driver.
I have an nVidia chipset on this box and ubuntu and derivatives have always
been quirky (as opposed to slackware) on this machine.
