[Solved] xfce: question on "kde" features

Hello there,

there are some features that I really like about KDE; but some (like the 2 to 4
seconds it takes on my Lenovo W510 with an i7 to launch dolphin) seem
to be a good reason to start with a plain xubuntu with 11.04.

Maybe you can help me by pointing out solutions for things that I
really like about KDE:

- "recent used" ... maybe I am just missing the menu (as I think
that gnome has it too) ... so, where can I find a list of documents/
applications that I used before?

- "menu search" ... with KDE, I can just type ... and KDE will show
me matching entries in its menu (minus the fact that I regard the
search to be pretty)

- single click for anything ... well; I saw that thunar can be configured
accordingly; too bad that this doesnt work for the desktop icons.

So, any feedback is welcome,

We don't have that currently. It is on my own todo list for 4.10 tho to add it to the panel as a plugin. However a lot of apps don't use the recent history and if they do they do it's also accessible from within the app, so it's not _that_ powerful imho.

There are some menu implementations in external plugins, but this won't be added to the applications menu. Personally I'm more looking for a combination of a command-line entrie in the panel that also works with known applications, so you can type and quickly launch. See the 4.10 appfinder roadmap for more information.

xfdesktop and thunar will be merged for 4.10, so that will also bring single-click to the desktop.

Hmm, so I wait for 12.04 and stay with KDE 'til then ;-(

Or get you used to the stuff that is around right now ... and will be pleased next year ;-)
Assuming that this here is resolved
with xubuntu 11.04 ...

Ah, one other question comes to my mind: is there a nice replacement for kjots?
(the kde application that allows me fill my bookshelf with all kinds of stuff more or less on the fly)

That would be great, I'm missing this as well. Does it also mean that the file open/save dialog will be single click when you click on a directory?

Re: [Solved] xfce: question on "kde" features

Some more findings:

a) I installed gnome synapse ... and that is all I need. It is fast, and very good for
"keyboard only" usage (esp. compared to xfce4-appfinder).

b) Just installed kjots on top of xubuntu ... works fine, looks fine.
So no replacement is required.

Well, I did find that my favorite browser opera now supports
"notes" - somewhat the same thing as kjots (chapters and pages more or
less). But less options (no export, no font selection, ...)
