Thunar & gvfs is fast

I am very pleased with how fast Thunar opens shares. It seems to populate the index of files in half or a third of the time it takes in Nautilus.

This is on Debian Wheezy and of course Xfce 4.8.

I mention this because I have seen reports of Thunar lagging in OpenSUSE and so on.

Nick (or anyone), can you outline why Thunar is so much faster than Nautilus? Both are loading thumbnails and so on. What are the differences?

Re: Thunar & gvfs is fast

I'm not entirely sure but I though nautilus generates the tumbnail in the same process, we use the Tumbler dbus service. Jannis and I found a big problem in this implementation that has been resolved in Thunar 1.3.0, so it might get even better. Other than that both use GIO/GVFS, so no big gains or losses.

Re: Thunar & gvfs is fast

I've just tried Nautilus in Ubuntu's Unity in 11.04 (Nasty Nark).

It kept throwing Dbus errors when trying to mount shares. If it it could mount them, it took about a minute to populate the index.

This is not Nautilus's problem though. It's not like that in Debian Wheezy. It has to do with how shoddy Nasty Nark is, even this long after release.
