Locale settings and missing thousands separator

Hi all,

When I set the Language settings to Dutch (Nederlands) the thousands separator is no longer there. This means a number like '123,456.78' (in English format) shows up as '123456,78' in stead of '123.456,78' as it would normally be in Dutch. That's pretty annoying when working with the calculator and such.

Is there a way to set the thousands separator to a period or is it completely missing in the Dutch language pack? In the last case, could it be  somehow added manually, also for currencies? I noticed in the English (US) language pack the thousands separator for currencies is also missing.

I hope someone can give me advice on this,

Thanks,
Bart

Re: Locale settings and missing thousands separator

You can probably export LC_NUMERIC to another locale.

Re: Locale settings and missing thousands separator

When you say exporting you mean copying? I found it in /var/lib/lintian/locale/en_US.UTF-8, but there's no other locale directory than 'en_US.UTF-8', so I wouldn't know where to copy it to.

And if there were a Dutch-locale, wouldn't this mean that I'd get the US thousands separator in my Dutch locale, ie. the comma in stead of the period?

I tried to open LC_NUMERIC with gedit, but it can't be opened with it and in mousepad I only get a couple of silly chinese charachters, so it seems impossible to make any changes.

Could you give me a few more hints, if there are any?

Re: Locale settings and missing thousands separator

put

export LC_NUMERIC="C"

in some of the files loaded on login. That could be ~/.bash_profile if you login from a shell or some profile file in /etc/ if you use a login manager. The C can be replaced with another installed language on your pc.

Re: Locale settings and missing thousands separator

Thanks for your help so far, but I'm sorry, I really am a noob. I put the line

export LC_NUMERIC=nl_NL.UTF-8

at the end of the */.bashrc file, but this doesn't seem to change anything (I rebooted of course). Note that I have installed Dutch, but I don't use it for windows and menu's, only in Regional Formats and I don't have the nl_NL.UTF-8 directory in /var/lib/lintian/locale.
Do you have any more hints?
