[Solved] HAL is still needed by Places applet ?

I'm using XFCE 4.8 on Opensuse 11.4 and I noticed that, if using Places applet, HAL is installed.

Then, Places applet works , even if hal seems not running (checked with pgrep hal, or ps ax | grep hal)
... But I just see my home and recent documents, I don't see mounted drives (i read somewhere I should see them)

Maybe I should avoid Places plugin for now and wait 4.10 ? :-)

In Archlinux there is a places applet (not in the official repos, you have to install it from AUR) which doesn't require hal. Then, it has a few crashes and bugs so it's clearly not at its best. I use it everyday anyway as still prefere it to directory plugin.

Re: [Solved] HAL is still needed by Places applet ?

I'm not using arch linux , anyway thank you for your reply
I tried arch only one time, but probably I was too noob to appreciate it; maybe I'll try again in the future :-)

Anyway, I hope there will be a well-working Places plugin in future versions of Xfce ...
It's quite nice to have one...

For now, I'm working around this using Directory applet, but I miss Recent Documents support and Mounted Drives :-(

Re: [Solved] HAL is still needed by Places applet ?

The mounting part is the worst, i think, but yes, only with the recent documents you have already a good reason to keep the places plugin on. Also the middle click is another nice feature. I think you should contact the opensuse dev in charge of the places package to remove the hal dependency (if that is what you wanted, in any case) or recompile the package yourself. Shouldn't take long, as that is the way it's done in Arch and lasts not even 5 minutes in my old computer. I hope everything gets sorted out with the 4.10 release *not putting pressure on the dev team* smile

Re: [Solved] HAL is still needed by Places applet ?

IT WORKS!

I always prefer to use distro-packaged software, but, needing this, I've looked inside PKGBUILD and done manually those commands...
It seems to be almost stable, sometimes crashing as you said... anyway I'll test it :-)

Thank you again!

Marking as solved :-)
