xfce4-mailwatch plugin not working

I am using Xfce 4.6.2 under Slackware 13.37 in my desktop PC D. Recently I installed the xfce4-mailwatch plugin (version 1.1.0) but it does not seem to be working when configured to interact with my mail server M. Here are some details:

M is accessed by means of POP3D on port 995, using SSL/TLS. When I configure xfce4-mailwatch accordingly on D, and I click on xfce4-mailwatch's Update Now button, here is what I am getting in /var/log/messages in M:

Mar 31 12:24:00 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3077516144]: Service pop3s accepted connection from 192.168.2.128:55085
Mar 31 12:24:00 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3077516144]: connect_blocking: connected 192.168.0.7:110
Mar 31 12:24:00 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3077516144]: Service pop3s connected remote server from 192.168.0.7:37372
Mar 31 12:24:00 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3077516144]: Connection closed: 11 bytes sent to SSL, 12 bytes sent to socket
Mar 31 12:24:00 M popa3d[10087]: Didn't attempt authentication

If instead I try and retrieve email from M using Thunderbird on D these are the traces that I am getting in /var/log/messages on M:

Mar 31 12:59:28 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3073735536]: Service pop3s accepted connection from 192.168.2.128:59764
Mar 31 12:59:28 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3073735536]: connect_blocking: connected 192.168.0.7:110
Mar 31 12:59:28 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3073735536]: Service pop3s connected remote server from 192.168.0.7:50257
Mar 31 12:59:28 M popa3d[10325]: Authentication passed for jca
Mar 31 12:59:28 M popa3d[10325]: 0 messages (0 bytes) loaded
Mar 31 12:59:28 M popa3d[10325]: 0 (0) deleted, 0 (0) left
Mar 31 12:59:29 M stunnel: LOG5[2077:3073735536]: Connection closed: 35 bytes sent to SSL, 44 bytes sent to socket

That is, under the same set of circumstances Thunderbird succeeds whereas xfce4-mailwatch fails. They are both configured in the same way, in that they both try and connect 192.168.2.132 at port 995, they both use SSL/TLS to interact with the POP3D server on M, they both use the same user name and password.

Something not entirely obvious from the traces is that both D and M have two NICs. For D I have: eth0: 192.168.0.7, eth1: 192.168.2.132; whereas for M I have: eth0: 192.168.0.3, eth1: 192.168.2.128. I wonder if this is somehow confusing xfce4-mailwatch? At any rate, I know for a fact that these four NICs are working properly. In fact, I have no issues reaching M from D by, say, ssh, using either NIC on D and M.

Anybody have any ideas as to what may be happening to xfce4-mailwatch here?
