Void Linux

Just took the Xfce Version of Void out for a test drive.  It is an independent distribution similar to Arch or Gentoo that does not use systemd.
It is not a new user friendly distro.   It comes with minimal software and no easy way to install software that I could find. (No synaptic or YUM)
If you don't mind using the command line to install software, then this is a very nice and quick distro.  http://www.voidlinux.eu/#download

Re: Void Linux

Void, lol? As in not valid? Or completely empty? Interesting name - I've seen plenty of products that were disappointing because their creators used a name that caused me to have high expectations that the product failed to deliver upon. Deciding to use a name that causes the user to expect, literally, nothing at all certainly avoids that possibility; if it even provides a running desktop, expectations have been surpassed wink .

But that's not why I'm posting. I am posting to ask if you'd happen to know why, with the web address suffix being .eu, the server is located in San Francisco, California, United States? I've gotten a bit paranoid these last few years as computer security things appear to have passed me by (meaning that I'm a lot less likely to be able to spot "bad things" on my system than I'm comfortable with), and it makes me somewhat leery of trying an operating system that is hosted on a server which purports to be located in the European Union when, in fact, it is actually located on the other side of the planet.

Regards,
MDM

Re: Void Linux

"why, with the web address suffix being .eu, the server is located in San Francisco, California, United States?"  No idea.  It has been mentioned on Phoronix, http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTM4NDg and Spatry's Cup of Linux, http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php?topic=2300.0
It is still kind of new, and is on the waiting list at DistroWatch.  It looks like it could use a few more users and support.  I just spent a few hours with it, and it seems to have the potential to make a name for itself.  I am guessing the name means that there was an empty spot in the Linux Universe and this distro arrived to fill the Void?
