Duplicate Files and Naming

Is there a Thunar setting that allow files to be automatically renamed when dragged and dropped into folders that have identical filenames? Ideally I would like to drag and drop, move, or copy a file to folder with a duplicate filename and have the filename automatically appended with parenthetical numbers.

Also, when duplicating a file the duplicates will be renamed:

another copy of 020807413637.txt
third copy of 020807413637.txt
4th copy of 020807413637.txt

Which ends up alphabetizing them so that they show up far away from the original file in a folder with many files. Can this be changed so that the duplicate file is appended with parenthetical numbers, so that it appears right next to the original file?

Re: Duplicate Files and Naming

It also works when you copy/paste a file. It would be nice by drag and drop files.
You can fill a bug/feature request on  https://bugzilla.xfce.org/

Re: Duplicate Files and Naming

yeah, but at least infolder copies are now renamed better (before it was copy of <filename>,  copy of copy <filename>, copy of copy of copy... - which placed the file bazillion miles away from the copied file...)

Re: Duplicate Files and Naming

Even so, within folders is better than nothing. I'm looking into updating to Thunar 1.6.6, but it seems like I have to install lots of dependencies. Is there an easy way to update it? I'm currently using Thunar 1.6.3.

Re: Duplicate Files and Naming

Use your distro's upgrade tool, maybe? It looks like Thunar 1.66 is already in the Xfce PPA, which works for Ubuntu-based distros such as Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, et cetera. I don't see which distro you use, so you might not be able to take advantage of a PPA, but I would assume that there are comparable things for distros which use other package types than .deb.

BtW, there is no longer a need to open two separate Thunar windows; this application has had tabs for... IDK, over a year?

Re: Duplicate Files and Naming

I use Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca. I don't see an update for Thunar in the update manager or in the software manager. I see you mention the PPA here: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=9187

Do I add the PPA like this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
sudo apt-get update

Re: Duplicate Files and Naming

Yes, that adds the repository to your sources list and updates the list of packages.
