connect two Linux (Ubuntu 15.04 and Xubuntu 14.04)

I would like to be able to access the directories and file between either of the the  PC's.
I am thinking that this can be done using samba but that is not clear. Everything I read implies that samba is for Linux <-> windows (?).
I do know that I can ping between the two PC's going through a DSL/Modem/Router. one machine is 10.0.0.101 and the other is 10.0.0.102 and this is
what I know at this point.

I am aware also of SSH but that looks a bit more involved and not sure if that is the way to go on such a simple connection.

I did have a Ubuntu PC and XP-PRO pc using samba and it seemed to work. I don't have the Windows in use any more and I am looking to just
connect the two (Ubuntu and Xubuntu) PC's.

Can anyone advise on using samba to accomplish this and instructions on how to do it.

Thanks.

Not really a Xfce issue so you might have better luck on  a Ubuntu support site. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if it has already been covered there.

Hi ozjd,

For connecting Linux systems, you might look into Network File Systems (NFS). It's fairly easy to set up, and it looks like you already have the IP connectivity you need.

Not me, I'm not the OP

Woops. Hi eightbits,

(Trust me. I'm a skilled professional.)

Samba is just a file sharing protocol and at this point is OS agnostic. In fact Samba ( their own compatible version of it ) has replaced AFP as the default file sharing protocol in Apples OSX.

Do you still have the Ubuntu shares set up? If you do open a terminal on the XFCE machine and run the following command:

thunar smb://10.0.0.101

I don't know which ip address you mentioned belongs to which machine so replace 10.0.0.101 with whatever the correct ip address of the Ubuntu machine.

What you are missing in Xubuntu is the way Ubuntu can create samba shares from it's from file manager. On Xubuntu you will need to add an application like system-config-samba.

Anyway, If these are both your machines I would think that SSH is easier to set up.

Can't help you with NFS, Haven't used it in ... maybe ... 25 years.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I had to drop that endeavour for a while.
