Xfce : Window's goes under the panel

Hi ,

When i open a window , often she goes under the panel : for exemple the terminal and firefox .
How fix this? I want that windows be limited to the panel and by my tv resolution which is 800x600.

Here a screenshot : http://pix.toile-libre.org/?img=1446572826.png

Re: Xfce : Window's goes under the panel

Hello and welcome.

A few things:

1. Your panels are not at the screen edge. In such a situation, I believe that they won't constrain the window as you are requesting.
2. In the panel properties, "Don't reserve space on borders" must be unchecked.
3. The terminal window looks like its too big to fit in the space you have available. Try lowering the terminal font size (which should decrease the size of the window) or specify a geometry that will allow the window to fit.

You can also try to adjust the margin settings (Settings Manager > Workspaces > Margins), but this will only work if there is adequate space on the desktop to accommodate the application's window. Specify values where you don't want windows to open onto.

Yes thats because when i put panels at the screen edge i dont see them .

I don't have this option . For info :

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:    Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
Release:    12.04
Codename:    precise
$

And my xfce version is the 4.8 .

I tried on sides , it doesn't change anything.

What do you mean? Is your video resolution wrong or monitor alignment off?

Ouch. Yes, this setting isn't available on 4.8.

Which terminal program is that?
You should be able to right-click on the window and choose properties or profile and change the default font (to something smaller). Also, you might be able to specify the default geometry (window size) in there as well. Otherwise, you may need to pass the program a "--geometry 'width'x'height'" or "-g 'width'x'height'" parameter.

But I think you should focus on getting the first issue resolved - it may resolve the others for you.

I don't know maybe both .

ToZ wrote:

xfce4-terminal

Ok this is possible.

ToZ wrote:

This option doesn't exist

You mean this command for exemple ? :

xrandr --output S-video --mode "800x700_60.00"

It works but i got bugs when i chose a higher resolution.

Re: Xfce : Window's goes under the panel

Maybe tell us a bit about your system.

- Which distro?
- Which version of Xfce?

xfce4-about -V

- Which video card?

lspci -vnn | grep -A12 VGA

- Your xrandr settings (before you change them)?

xrandr -q

- The contents of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Re: Xfce : Window's goes under the panel

I'm going to go back to:

Yes thats because when i put panels at the screen edge i dont see them .

If you're monitor/resolution/alignment is set up properly, you should be able to move the panel to one of the edges and still see it. There is nothing in your log files posted above that says its shouldn't. Is it possible that the image on your monitor is shifted so that its not centered and parts of the visible X display are off to the side?

For your "S-Video" connection, do you have any controls on that device that allow you to move the image left/right/up/down to get it centered? What is the make and model of this device?

Re: Xfce : Window's goes under the panel

They made televisions with 800*600 resolution?

Yes, exactly

The tv is connect with the tower by a simple cable S-video , same as Game station (ex : playstation) and i just got a remove for a few controls( already checked , no change, possibly worst )

Re: Xfce : Window's goes under the panel

I'm afraid I won't be able to help you with the setup of the TV. The reason why the apps are opening up under the panel is because the panel isn't at the edges. If you get the monitor situation sorted out, the issue should resolve itself.

I understand but in that case , why when i use the tv for others things like video games ,the resolution is better ??

That would tend to lend credence to the theory that you have the resolution - and/or frequency, it it is a CRT - settings incorrect on your computer for that television, lol.

Providing some basic information, such as the device's brand/model number and its native resolution/frequency would give people at least a hope of being able to help you.
