xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

My installation of XFCE on Debian Sid has started filling up my .xsessions-error file with errors
every time I move icons on the desktop.

There is line after line like this :

(xfdesktop:5120): CRITICAL **: xfdesktop_file_icon_manager_drag_data_get: assertion 'info == TARGET_TEXT_URI_LIST' failed

Anyone ?

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

What version of xfdesktop are you using:

xfdesktop -V

There was some recent work done on trying to fix the moving icons bug.

Does this affect your ability to move icons and/or drag and drop them (e.g. drag and drop a text file on a file editor application icon and have the editor open with the file displayed)?

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

frank@frank-debian:~$ xfdesktop -V
This is xfdesktop version 4.12.3, running on Xfce 4.12.
Built with GTK+ 2.24.28, linked with GTK+ 2.24.28.
Build options:
    Desktop Menu:        enabled
    Desktop Icons:       enabled
    Desktop File Icons:  enabled

No it doesn't affect either operation...although sometimes when logging back in some of the icons are not where they
are supposed to be (where I last left them).

This is a recent development...I haven't  used xfce for sometime and I guess a bunch of packages have been
updated since the last usage.

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

Here is the on-going bug report about icons resetting their positions.

As for the error message, can you create another account on your computer and see if the same messages are generated in that account's .xsession-errors file? Lets see if this an issue with your user profile or a more systemic issue.

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

Sorry I misled you on one point: this is happening on my Fedora 21 instalation, not on Debian Sid. Sometimes it's hard to tell where I am smile

This is the version info for Fedora

This is xfdesktop version 4.10.3, running on Xfce 4.10.
Built with GTK+ 2.24.25, linked with GTK+ 2.24.28.
Build options:
    Desktop Menu:        enabled
    Desktop Icons:       enabled
    Desktop File Icons:  enabled
[frankzen@localhost ~] $

A new user doesn't solve the problem. xsessions-error is still being spammed
with the same message.

The icon reordering problem has been partly solved. When I logged in today
only one icon, a folder, a symlink which points to a directory on an external USB
drive was out of place. Everything else was fine.
What I did was delete all the icon.screen0 XXX files in ~/.config/xfce
One was recreated and the icons, once reset, seemed to stay where they were
except for the music folder.

One strange thing just struck me: this is happening on my Fedora 21 installation...but not
on my Debian sid installation. The versions are not that far apart. 4.12.3 on Debian
and 4.10.3 on Fedora.

Thanks

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

I'm not sure why you are getting that error with xfdesktop 4.10 on fedora. Perhaps you can file a bug report through fedora or just ignore it if its not causing you any problems. Looks likes it related to drag and drop xfdesktop functionality.

As for the differences between 4.10.3 and 4.12.3, they are significant. Most likely the bug (?) you are experiencing has been fixed for the 4.12.x series.

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

I'll file a bug with Fedora. And bug them about upgrading to 4.12 from 4.10.
Thanks

It's in Fedora 22 (IIRC) and 23. Or, if you don't want to update your Fedora, try here:

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

I'm not ready to upgrade so those links will be great (I hope).

Thanks

Re: xfdesktop errors in .xsessions-error

Worked perfectly! Had to uninstall several plugins first...including power-manager, notes plugin, cell modem plugin,
smart bookmark plugin and whisker-menu as for some reason they haven't been ported.
But all in all, a good experience.

Thanks
