Thumbnail Preview in GtkFileChooser

I saw on the official Thunar news page (http://thunar.xfce.org/news.html#2006-09-03) that a package called "libexo" is supposed to add thumbnail preview functionality for GtkFileChooser, a feature I sorely missed when using GNOME.

However, I'm using Xubuntu 7.04, and there are no thumbnail previews available when using GtkFileChooser. I have "libexo-0.3.2-0ubuntu2" installed. Am I supposed to do something to get the thumbnail preview pane as seen in the screenshot in the previously mentioned news post?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Thumbnail Preview in GtkFileChooser

That's for developers use, they have to use the exo code. So installing exo does absolutely nothing ^-^.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. So does that mean the feature will be present for endusers in a future update of Xfce? I hope so.

The lack of thumbnail previews in the filechooser was one of my biggest reasons for ditching GNOME, actually. I'm glad the Xfce devs decided to remedy this highly annoying problem.

Re: Thumbnail Preview in GtkFileChooser

It is used in Xfce 4.4, IIRC the Xfdesktop background chooser uses it for example and applications that use the icon chooser dialog.

Well I was really talking about uploading images via web forms (using Firefox).

Most of my images have numeric filenames, and when uploading them to a web site via an upload form, GtkFileChooser only has a list view, therefore I have to open Thunar, navigate to the desired image (finding it via the thumbnail view in Thunar), note its filename, and then relocate it using GtkFileChooser so that I can upload it. It's not intuitive at all.

So when I saw that libexo is supposed to add thumbnail previews for images in GtkFileChooser, I was confused since the feature isn't in Xubuntu 7.04 using the latest Xfce release.

Re: Thumbnail Preview in GtkFileChooser

Firefox needs to use the exo hack to show the preview or apply the hack inside gtk. So this is not a plugin/modules or whatever for the gtk open dialog (not possible), it's code you can use in your application as a developer.

Oh, I see now. So in other words, you'd need to modify Firefox itself to get the thumbnail previews in the filechooser?  :-(

So I guess I'll have to join the other people begging the GNOME devs to add certain functionality to GtkFileChooser itself then.  roll

Thanks for all the info.
