Terminal not registering input

Terminal 0.2.8 in Xubuntu Hardy LTS (upgraded Gutsy).

If I enter a sudo command in Terminal, when it prompts me for my password, it does not accept input. I tried most of the obvious things like caps lock etc then reinstalled Terminal via Synaptic and ran FSCK. It may be a simple setting, but I can't find it. Any clues?
