Best way to upgrade

Hi All!
Im have an Slackware 12.2.
My question is because i want to know your opinion about upgrading XFCE.
I never do an upgrade yet, but i want to do that.
My plan is uninstalling the previous version (removepkg xfce) and install the new compilated version (installpkg xfce_xxx.tgz)
Is that rigth? or the best is install the new version wihtout remove the previous one.

Any ideas?

Re: Best way to upgrade

I don't use Slackware, but if it's anything like Debian or Ubuntu, "xfce" is just a meta-package that various Xfce-related packages. Uninstalling it may not uninstall the other packages.

Your best bet is to just install the upgrade in /usr/local. If your PATH is set with /usr/local/bin before /usr/bin, then the upgrade will override the original version. And if it works, then you can uninstall the old version.  Otherwise it will be easy to remove the new version because all of the files are in /usr/local
