install from source

If someone wants to compile from source, rather than install readymade xfce packages, or use the installer... Can anyone point me to a 'how to' article on how to do that please.

When I untarred the source, it contained a collection of tarballs. I'm thinking they need to be compiled and installed in a certain order to satisfy dependencies, but the README files therein weren't very helpful.
