QT config doesn't work

Hello !

I use XFCE for a while and I'm always impressed by its simplicity and lightweight.
So I've chosen Xubuntu as the OS for my HTPC.
The screen is a LCD TV with a big resolution and I watch it from a sofa. So the normal size fonts are unreadable (or you must have very good eyes wink ).

I have increased the size of fonts in XFCE parameters and it works well ... for all GTK applications hmm
I use Kaffeine and Amarok sometimes which are QT applications. I've found the QT4 parameters in the menus but the settings apply just for the configuration window. The font size is not used by the others QT applications.

I've searched a lot in Google but I didn't found something useful.
I don't know where to start to solve this problem.

Someone has an idea ?

Re: QT config doesn't work

As a fellow traveler and user of Xfce (and most certainly not an expert) I'll just jump in here and show my ignorance.

I have a couple of QT applications. The QT4 configuration applet was installed with the QT4 application (KeePassX). When I set font name and size in the QT4 configuration applet and saved the settings by hitting Ctrl+S, it would correctly affect KeePassX, but it had no apparent effect on the other QT application. It turned out that the other application was a QT3 application which had not installed the QT3 configuration applet as a dependency. Once I figured that out I installed the qt3-qtconfig and was able to set font type and size for the QT3 application. I thought it was weird to have to do that, but at least it worked.

I don't suppose your situation might be similar? If not, please forgive my intrusion.

I will watch this thread with interest, because I would like to know whether or not one can control all QT applications of all levels with just a single configuration applet.

Re: QT config doesn't work

I tried the qt3 config but nothing changed ...
Maybe I should ask this question to a QT or KDE forum ?

Re: QT config doesn't work

Seems like a good idea. I'm sure that someone at http://www.qtforum.org/ can help you. The place seems to be more for developers than users, but they do have an installation forum.

I'm sorry my idea didn't pan out for you, but it was a shot in the dark.

Re: QT config doesn't work

Same problem here with Kaffeine and qt4 and qt3 config! I'm also on a LCD TV and fonts in menus are really small. I'm using kaffeine 0.8.7

Re: QT config doesn't work

Well, I wasn't very helpful the first time around, so I'm back to see if I can be just as unhelpful in the second try.

;D

The only QT application I'm using now is KeePassX. I found that adjusting fonts and point sizes in the QT4-config applet didn't fix all text in KeePassX, just most of it. The text in its descriptions / comments areas was really tiny.

It turned out that the application itself had a location in its preferences dialogs that I was able to use for specifying more legible fonts. If your problem is with small fonts withing the menus of Kaffeine itself, then maybe Kaffeine has a setting buried somewhere within its GUI (or maybe in its configuration files) that can help you.

I'm totally unfamiliar with Kaffeine, so I'm only guessing.

Hope you find a solution. I'm thinking that either QT people or Kaffeine people may be able to help you more than Xfce people.

Good luck!

Re: QT config doesn't work

Caffeine and Amarok are KDE4 apps, not just Qt4 ones. Try installing KDE system settings (if not already installed) and configuring them from there.

Re: QT config doesn't work

Sry, forgot to mention I already installed and tried systemsettings (for kde) with no luck. I also checked  .kde/share/apps/kaffeine for possible settings. I even compiled Kaffeine 0.8.8 - no change.

Often times in Linux, there is a small config file you can edit manually and solve your problem, but not this time it seems.

EDIT: there is no font widget in systemsettings (kde) only for icons, and that changes icons (buttons) in Kaffeine. Weird.

Re: QT config doesn't work

Jiipiii! SOLVED!

Added:

[General]
desktopFont=Bitstream Vera Sans,16,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
fixed=Bitstream Vera Sans Mono,14,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
font=Bitstream Vera Sans,16,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
menuFont=Bitstream Vera Sans,16,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
shadeSortColumn=true
smallestReadableFont=Bitstream Vera Sans,10,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
taskbarFont=Bitstream Vera Sans,16,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
toolBarFont=Bitstream Vera Sans,16,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0
widgetStyle=qtcurve

To the file .kde/share/config/kdeglobals
(In some cases it could be .kde4/share/config/kdeglobals)

Edit to your liking! Now I have BIG fonts in kaffeine!

Re: QT config doesn't work

Found out that the font widget/module supposed to appear in systemsettings is included in the package kde4-workspace and that has A LOT of dependencies. Not fun fun  if you're running LXDE or Xfce.

And that there actually was a plain text config file to edit!! Linux is great!
