Multi Monitor Errors - cannot open display

Hi,
I've searched and searched for help on this but I can't find anything similar. I had everything seemingly working using my dual monitor setup until I started to look into wallpapering my desktop/s. My setup appears to just clone my laptop display, but I noticed I had a second display device under the background tab.

Monitor 1 (VGA-0) - Monitor 2 (LVDS)

I figured it was smarter than me and decided to try and use different backgrounds for each display, which I did using an image list, but only for a single display before I got distracted setting up my audio. In working on my audio I had to reboot, which is when the problems started. It took my a while to narrow it down as I was making changes to my audio at the time. Regardless, now it loads horribly slow while logging in now.

Symptoms:
After logging in after a reboot, the display goes white instead of the normal grayish color, then the cursor and the mouse logo blink heavily.
Sometimes I get and error about the panel losing focus and my tray apps don't all load, let alone my session. If it does finish loading minutes later it is terribly sluggish and apps lock up.
25+ instances of xfdesktop running

.xsession-errors:
Maximum number of clients reached
(xfdesktop:2286): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0  <--- Tons of these
(tilda:3398): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead       <--- Ditto
** (xfwm4:2086): WARNING **: Another Window Manager is already running
xfdesktop[2198] is already running; assuming --reload               <--- Same

...and lots of others I don't know how to troubleshoot. Happy to post whole thing but didn't want to spam it.

I've since disabled wallpaper on both monitors, but no joy. The only thing that works is unplugging the second monitor.

Is there any way to unplug the second monitor and reset the settings back to stock somehow? I woulda backed up the files, but didn't know what files the interface was editing when I made the changes. I've since learned I should back up the entire xconf folder.

I'm really at wits end here and hope I can find some guidance. I just don't want to further bugger things up.

Thanks,
Ako

Re: Multi Monitor Errors - cannot open display

I've done a lot more reading and realized that my default monitor seems to be wrong. I was wondering what LVDS meant, but assumed that it was my external monitor as it was listed as monitor 2. I've also searched on how to set the default monitor in xfce, but this seems to be a running problem for others who want to use an extended desktop and can't get the layout right. I just prefer a clone as I had it. Most solutions I've read so far involve the use of xorg.conf, but from my research and a look inside mine, it's been replaced by the use of KMS. KMS says you can delete the xorg.conf and it will still work fine, so I'd like to stay away from a solution for now that involves editing it, as it was working fine before and I just want to repair what went wrong.

I've read the info at wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting, but can't find anything relevant. I searched for the radeon-kms.conf file referenced, but I don't seem to have one. I've also read about Xandr and some GUIs for it that have helped people but I really want to stay away from installing software that just may amplify an existing problem. So if the default monitor problem isn't causing my other problems, it's still something that needs fixed and may be a good starting point but I can't find any solid information on how set the default.

A look at the Xorg.0.log isn't revealing the answer to me. It seems like the VGA is being detected as the monitor which is correct.

A snippet from the following Xorg.0.log:

Could someone please at least point me in the right direction if they know? If I'm asking wrong, or not searching for relevant information properly I'd be happy to find the information myself, but so far I just end up in an endless loop of outdated information, or information that's over my head. I've spent hours reading but don't feel any further along.

Here is some more information that may or may not be relevant:
