desktop settings changed after log out/login

I have xfce 4.8 on Xubuntu 10.10 x64.

Most of the time, when I log out and log back in, I find that my settings have been changed (no title bar on windows, caret has changed shape to a black x, number of workspaces has increased or decreased). If I log out and log back in again (usually several times), everything has changed back to the way it was. Even when I had the session chooser displayed at login and chose a previous session, the settings were changed when I logged back into it, regardless of which previous session I chose.

I don't know if this is related, but it usually takes a long time (at least 1 or 2 minutes) to actually log off after I click log out.
