[Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

Hi, this is probably a noob question, but I can't seem to find an answer.  I have Ubuntu 11.04 (technically, iQunix 11.04) installed, and it's running Gnome 2. I want to try getting XFCE on it, but I can't seem to find the package in the Software Center.

Am I missing a PPA that I need to include?  Everything I've read seems to suggest that I should have xubuntu-desktop available to install with no hassles.

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

you have to use Synaptic and install xubuntu-desktop package.
Or simply open a terminal and run this command :

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

or if you just want the window manager and not all the application with xubuntu (gnumeric, abiword, ...) :

sudo apt-get install xfce4

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

Hmm well wkr, I had tried that command earlier today, and I got "Unable to locate package", so I assumed I was missing a PPA or was otherwise doing something foolish.  However, now when I try it, it seems to be working...  Maybe I needed a System Update after my fresh install?

azertyh, thanks for the suggestion.  I'm really only interested in trying XFCE itself, so I want as little additional inclusions as I can get.

Thanks for the help, I think I'm on the road to XFCE now!

Isn't Ubuntu still using 4.6?

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

I use 10.4LTS, it only installs 4.6.  I am not sure why they don't have the latest version of Xfce for the LTS version.

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

There is a PPA for 4.8 for the LTS.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexx2000/xfce
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

I thought I saw a post somewhere referring to that PPA, but it isn't an official repository and was listed as untrusted.
I also have ubuntu 64bit and that says it is the 32bit version.

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

SoFL W -> A released version of Ubuntu doesn't get newer versions of packages other than in very rare cases. The only thing it gets is security fixes. So, if 10.04 was released with xfce 4.6, (which was the newest on the release of 10.04) that is what it will have.

If you want a newer version, PPA's are the way to go.
(I don't use Ubuntu myself, so I don't know where to find a good PPA though)...

Tried that, after the update part I received a pop-up about partial upgrade.  I am not 100% sure but I think it has to do with the 32/64 bit differences.  Although I would like to upgrade to 4.8, I did not perform any part of the upgrade because of the partial upgrade problem.

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

It's always a problem when new packages are needed but the version repo is frozen. Xfce 4.8 is a real advantage over 4.6. Though Ubuntu 11.04 is foul, Xubuntu 11.04 is pretty good.

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

I tried 11.4 Xubuntu on my old laptop and it made me want to run xfce on my desktop.  I like the way things are running on my desktop with 10.4 so I will stick with it for the time being.  I have already thought about switching distros when the time comes, I just don't have the time to do a fresh/clean install.  I want to get rid of my WinXP dual boot and start fresh  If I could get 4.8 working I would do it, but from what I have read on the Ubuntu forums people have had problems.

Re: [Solved] Installing XFCE on Ubuntu 11.04

The 12.04 LTS would be a good time to switch. While Ubuntu will be total garbage, Xubuntu will be fine, perhaps excellent.
