Well this is not a great start to trying to use Xfce4. Went to login to Xfce4 again this morning and no panels are shown ... not one at the top nor one at the bottom. Aside from the basic functionality of a right click context menu, this renders this WM effectively as much use as a chocolate teapot.
So, any wise words about how to recover the panel ... let alone why the damned thing would go AWOL in the first place. This does not give me a good feeling about transferring from Gnome to Xfce4 if this is going to happen. Also the mailing list is so slow and low volume, I could wait a month of Sundays trying to get support from there, so I hope that more people read - and reply to - posts here than what seems to be the case on the mailing list.
TIA

Alt+F2 and start xfce4-panel. Make sure you save your session on logout.

Thanks Nick.
Any idea why this would have happened in the first place? Can't say it was very reassuring for a new user!
Thanks again for the help.

Segfault most likely. 4.8 panel is much more stable then in 4.6.
