[Solved] Application menu structure: how to change?

I read in the faq how to add or cancel single items in the menu structure. I'm a bit confused, because in the faq they say to save the menu related  *.desktop files to /usr/share/applications while elsewhere is mentioned .local/share/applications ????

But, is there a way to change the structure itself? I can see there is the editor of Gnome still (i removed Gnome, but not as total because some of their multimedia programs i need), but it doesn't work like expected although it shows a menu structure. But i think that's related to my previous Gnome installation.

Hi. There is a GUI menu editor, which makes editing the menu much easier. It's LXMED, which is (as its initials suggest) intended for the LXDE desktop, but which seems to work with Xfce as well. You can download it from

I don't know if it will do all that you want to do, but it may be worth trying.

You can find the structure in /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu.
Don't forget the backup, befor you change this file.

Thanks to both. I checked lxmed and seems quite smart to me
