Fedora 16 Xfce spin, fresh install
Thunar-1.3.0-4.fc16.x86_64
Xfce 4.8
Thunar is the default file manager
Thunar manages the desktop
Problem description and further information:
Desktop trash icon is empty at login, even though there are items in trash
Desktop trash icon changes to full after items are added to trash. But, trash icon reverts to empty after next login
Trash icon in Thunar side panel is not empty at login
Problem appears to persist regardless of icon theme

I think it isn't Thunar that manages the desktop. Did you hack it or something?
Anyway, I reported a bug for this at https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9006 and I'm using Xfce 4.10, Thunar 1.4.0
Since I have no xfdesktop the issue shows up for me as Thunar only showing trash properly the second time I open it (must close first instance).

Thanks. I've added to the bug report.
By "Thunar manages the desktop" I mean that Thunar manages the display of the desktop icons. I'm pretty sure that is true of my install...

It's an application called xfdesktop that does that. But the developers were working on making Thunar do that in the future.
Anyway, since a similar issue happens for me and I don't have xfdesktop installed, it could be an issue with the gvfs handling (gvfs takes care of the trash).

I just noticed that this is still happening. Panicked for a moment that everything in trash was gone but all is still there even though the icon shows empty.

What version of Xfce are you using? I'm still on 4.8. I was hoping the problem was fixed in 4.10, but maybe not?

Wheezy is shipping with 4.8. So until 4.10 gets into the backports, that's the only option.

This bug is persisting with me:
Fedora 19
xfdesktop-4.10.2-1.fc19.x86_64
Thunar-1.6.3-1.fc19.x86_64
Xfce is the only desktop environment I have installed.
Adding 'xfdesktop' to Startup (Menu > Settings > Session and Startup) works as a temporary fix.
