Is there a way to customize the panel further?

I really love xfce, but its panel is absolutely disgusting.

If I set it to the system theme, it has some grayish color, and I can't tell it apart from most windows, such as Iceweasel.

If I set it to a custom color much different than the system setting, then it looks even more ugly because none of the other elements on the panel take that color. This seems like design 101.

So, can I replace it with something else? Like Tint2?

Or better yet, can I have more control over how stuff on it actually looks? Loading a picture for it might solve the problem, but it would be much better if I could set  a simple gradient.

I think that is controlled by the theme. Selecting a new theme may improve it for you. E.g. Hex_Ward from http://xfce-look.org/ is one with a gradient.

Thanks, but could you tell me where can I edit the panel in the theme conf files? I've only found some icons... Because I just like the plain Xfce theme.

Sorry I don't know much about editing themes. There is some info in the wiki I think.

You can set a background image for the panel. www.xfce-look.org may have some good backgrounds.

Re: Is there a way to customize the panel further?

Here's a big document on all kinds of different GTK elements that can be controlled through your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=377397

For panels specifically, note how the panel widget class is addressed here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1144230

For a few words on inheritance and the like, read here:
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/Tutorials/GtkThemes

In the theme conf files, it would be the gtkrc file in /usr/share/themes/{theme name}/gtk-2.0/
Also, look through the docs provided with different GTK theme engines for more options available.  There is the Xfce engine, Murrine, and Smooth to name a few; even more on gnome-look.org and the like.
