[Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

I've just installed lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter on my laptop.  I've tried replacing the default image with one I like better but it doesn't show.  I've used the GIMP to shrink the image to the right size but nothing.  Right now, the image is a jpg.  Is there a special format needed?

Also, I keep getting a message just before the greeter comes up about not being able to find a font True.  I presume that's a separate issue, but would appreciate any suggestions.  (I might add that it works fine on my desktop, but I've not tried to customize it, probably because I only log out to reboot, and only reboot for kernel upgrades or hardware issues.)

BTW, both are running Fedora 17, fully updated, if that makes a difference.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

Hi Sideburns,
Please try to write the full path in your config file, i.e., /path/to/the/file. Do not use something like ~/file.
Never had problems with the resolution/file type.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

I had been writing the full path: /home/joe/Pictures/5-45.jpg.  I also used the GIMP to convert it to a .png without any effect.  However, copying it to /usr/share/backgrounds/images/5-54.png worked fine.  Weird, isn't it?

Yep, weird.
Can you please check if you have any extra 'space' in the end of your path, for example "/home/joe/Pictures/5-45.jpg ". If so, please delete it.
From my expirience, with the extra space(s) it does not work ...

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

The file is on another computer and I don't have time right now.  However, I did the editing in a terminal, using nano.  The easiest way to get to the end of a line (no mouse support) is to go down to the beginning of the next line and use the left arrow key, and doing that put the cursor just to the right of the last character in the name.  Also, I didn't completely re-write the file name, I just deleted the path and re-wrote that, leaving the /5-54.png unaltered and It Just Worked.  Nice thought, though, because there are places where things like that can come back and haunt you.  (i.e., try adding a line to the bottom of /etc/fstab and not hitting Enter at the end and see what happens.)

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

OK. My final suggestion is to check the permissions of the file ...
No more ideas form my side. Nevertheless, you could sort it out anyway.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

I can't see how permissions could possibly be a problem.  When I copied it, it worked, with the same permissions.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

True, but as far as I know, lightdm user needs read access to the wallpaper file.
When you copied the file to /usr/share/... it was copied with sudo, so any permission issue is solved.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

No it wasn't.  I don't use sudo and made sure it wasn't installed on my laptop.  (Hint: I don't use Ubuntu.)  And, the default perms are world readable.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

Ok, if permissions are ok and config file is ok I have no more ideas. Sorry.
Anyway, when I said 'sudo' you can read 'root user'. As I use ubuntu minimal + xfce sometimes I forget that other distros do not have sudo by default. No ofence.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

None taken.  I just wanted to point out that not everybody uses sudo for admin.  I started using Linux back in the '90s when sudo wasn't included in my distro, so I learned to use su.  Now, I prefer it because "su -c" is only one more character than sudo and, if I need to do more than one command, I only need to type su once.  BTW, my personal preference in giving suggestions is to do something "as root," and leave the method up to the reader.

If you're interested, here's a link to the original of the image I'm using: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_Na … aining.jpg  Back when I was on the Gun Line in '72, my ship's main weapon was the Mod 0 of this and it brings back old memories, not all of them bad.

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

Hi Sideburns. Have been busy in last few days.
Nice photo. Thanks for sharing.
Well I tried the photo on my greeter and it worked fine.
Just my curiosity, wich distro are you using ?
My first linux expirience was in late 90's / begining of 2000's (not sure). I installed Red Hat.
Later I tried Fedora Core 3 (or 4, not sure) - Bought a box at Amazon.
However always have gone back to windows.
The permanent change to linux was in 2008 with Ubuntu 08.04.
Since then I tried other distros but always went back to Ubuntu.
Currently I install a minimal version of Ubuntu (cli only) and then install just what I want/need. I have a few screenshot in 2013 screenshot session of the forum if you are courious...

Re: [Solved] Problem configuring lightdm

I'm using Fedora 17 on both my desktop and laptop right now.  I'm planning to upgrade the laptop to 18 RSN, and if all goes OK, do the desktop.
