How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0? When I click on the http://thunar.xfce.org link in Thunar's Help > About, I'm taken to Xfce's front door instead. Thanks - Mark.

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

Thank you, Sir! I will.

I'd like to get rid of the icons alltogether. They take up too much vertical space. I could double the number of files displayed if there were no icons. Do you know how to do it?

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

just right click the panel choose add to panel and scroll to the bottom and second from last
select window menu and add to panel you willl now have a launcher to click and you can view or select opened windows

this will save you some real estate on your panel smile

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

Thank you, darius. That's a nice feature and I will use it.

But when I asked how to get rid of the icons, I meant the icons in Thunar - in both the tree on the left and the file list on the right.

Ciao - Mark.

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

to hide the side panel in thunar

in the toolbar at the top of thunar ~ file edit view go help

click view then scroll to side pane and untick shortcuts  so thunar only shows icons and no panels are shown

is this what you wanted ?

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

Hahahahaha.... No. I don't want to hide any panels. I like the tree on the left and the file list on the right (well, actually, I'd like 2 file list windows, but that's another subject).

I want to kill the icons. That's all.

== BEFORE ==

[ icon ]  My files

[ icon ]  Your files

[ icon ]  Their files

== AFTER ==

  My files
  Your files
  Their files

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

Try 'View' > 'View as Detailed List' to see the icons of which I speak.

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

Like what you did with 'Documents' in the File List panel, yes. Except that, with the icons gone, I then want to tighten up the list so there's more lines.

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

I honestly was joking about that I really didn't think that was want you wanted to do wow !!!

This is nuts !!! you are now in pole position on my list of the maddest people Ive ever encountered

WHY WOULD SOMEONE even contemplate this ???

you have compact and then list both are as minimal as you will ever NEED other than that you should go back to dos and leave the gui alone, that way you will have all the space you will ever need !!! other than that lower the dpi but that will just shrink everything ,icons, text size etc etc but wont give you the one line you want .. you head case !!!

OK lets think of this even if you created a png 1x1 with gimp and specified that icon as the folder or folders in your target destination folder
the place holder will still display the same size icon but it will be blank.. in order for this to be achieve you would have to hack the way xfce4 handles files and folders and that would be a complete rewrite

lets put this into perspective .. not even if all the devs went to vegas for a week and brought with them  a couple of sheets of acid, coke and enough booze to fuel the death star would the scenario arise to them sitting down and saying ok so what can we do to xfce4 thats crazy
............I know ya know that compact and list view in thunar ..yea.. well lets remove the place holders and icons so its just a filename

trust me this wouldnt even enter there minds and if someone did mention this I think it would be murder in vegas .. when the trial date arrives and who ever is alive and in court they would be asked why did you kill .. well its like this someone said and preposed the most stupid thing we have ever heard and thought this warrants murder in vegas

COMPACT LIST IS AS SMALL AS YOU CAN GET !!! the icons are virtual the same size as the filename

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

Hahahahahaha... I wish I could see you, darius! ...You...are...a...character... Yesyouare!

My file manager in Windows is Total Commander - it has no folder tree panel, but 2 file list panels, side-by-side, in a 'Commander-style' interface. I have it set up without icons and this is what I get vertically on a 1440x900 screen: Title bar + Menu bar + Tabs + Panel bar (like title bar) + Column headers ('Name', 'Ext', 'Size', 'Date',...) + 49 file list lines + Status bar. And I could make the font smaller and get even more.

Total Command has a setup option to use or avoid icons. I'd hoped that Thunar had the same. I'm a newbie and I don't know about all these .config files and what they have.

Thanks for your attention and for caring. Ciao - Mark.

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

No problem mark ..

other alternatives are squinting and moving back from your computer .. that way it will give you the sense there smaller
Yea Im familiar with commander I just dont understand why the mad need for the one liner as I call it ..  list detail view is good enough
there is a think called being too minimalist ..

I suppose each to there own !! every dog likes to chew his own bone !!!

Re: How do I get help for Thunar 1.4.0?

I don't have to squint. The text is plenty big... as large as most web pages... As large as the text lines in this web page. What's missing is wasted vertical space. I see more files so... less scrolling, and more efficient file handling. And ask any woman: size does make a difference.
