Logs, Logs, Logs?

I sometimes see questions - for that matter, sometimes have some of my own - about unexpected behavior, a thing that has changed the way it works from previously. And I think, "It's likely that something in the system changed... And it's not unreasonable to think that the change might be detailed in a log file somewhere."

Is there a FAQ somewhere, here or elsewhere on the Internet, that is current/updated and applicable to (specifically) our favorite desktop environment, that lists the various log files that are created in linux, where they are stored, how to access them, and possibly some general help with understanding the information they might contain?

Such a resource would seem to be helpful.

Thanks,
MDM

Re: Logs, Logs, Logs?

Most of the logs are stored in /var/log and many of them can't even be read without root access.  If you want to find out what errors have been reported during your current X session, check ~/.xsession-errors for details.
