I tried this: but it did not work: http://askubuntu.com/questions/294834/s … el-missing

Hey, I'm having exactly the same problem.

Could you tell me what have you done?

Re: debian after full upgrade theme icons missing

An old thread I know, but it just happened to me on Debian Stretch (at this point of time a Debian Testing version so I excepted some minor bugs but so affecting and after 2+ years?) and Xfce4.12.2
I started to investigate my problem with missing icons in many places over the whole system (including desktop, some apps like VLC or Terminology, window decoration icons, default symbols like directory, Cairo-Dock Applications Menu, Lightdm Greeter and many other). This all leads me to think that it is related to GTK somehow.

Things worth noting:

  • jjacky.com's post and related bug report
I would rather like to avoid messing the source-code up without in-depth context knowledge and rebuilding GTK libs on my own.

  • Running gtk-demo shouts the following: Q234hsVs.png and /usr/share/gtk-2.0/demo/gnome-fs-regular.png is just a standard PNG image data, 48 x 52, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

  • On the other hand, running strace -f -s4096 -o Thunar-strace.log Thunar reports many ENOENT (No such file or directory) but those might be related with me trying tricks with gtk-update-icon-cache and other $HOME/.icons / $HOME/.local/share/icons moves. No idea.

The wallpaper is gone after this upgrade too…

I have blindly tried different paths mentioned here and there without any success yet.
Any suggestions for the fix are highly appreciate (maybe except for using timeshift backup from before today's dist-upgrade which I have available).
Encourage you to actively interchange ideas/solutions.

I'm thinking about locating, temporarily downgrading and marking the package that introduce all that shit to be on hold for the time it is resolved anyhow or a workaround is present (if you tell me to reinstall the whole OS from scratch then I switch back to Windows! wink JK, but to dwm at least tongue ).

By the way, hello on the Xfce forums! :-)

EDIT: fixed a path typo and removed manual signature

Re: debian after full upgrade theme icons missing

Try updating the gdk-pixbf cache. As root:

gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache

Log out and back in again to see if it helps.

It might also be good to clear your sessions cache when not logged in:

rm -rf ~/.cache/sessions

...this might fix those other pesky issues you are seeing.

And welcome to the forums.

Re: debian after full upgrade theme icons missing

Thanks for a quick reply, ToZ.

I logged out, switched to tty1 for root, called gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache, validate updated /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache, fixed permissions to include a+r (my default umask made the file readable only by root), restarted lightdm service, logged in on tty7 as user. Nothing changed.
Then I logged out and repeated the process again removing user session cache directory in the first step. Sadly nothing changed either. sad

I also found ~/.xsession-errors to include among other things like:

(xfce4-session:5872): xfce4-session-WARNING **: xfsm_manager_load_session: Something wrong with /home/user/.cache/sessions/xfce4-session-LOE:0, Does it exist? Permissions issue?
(xfdesktop:5904): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'image-missing' for stock: Unrecognized image file format

(wrapper-1.0:6008): weather-WARNING **: Failed to open fallback icon from standard theme: /usr/share/xfce4/weather/icons/liquid/22/nodata.png

(wrapper-1.0:6008): weather-WARNING **: No default icon theme? This should not happen, plugin will crash!
(wrapper-1.0:6008): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_image_set_from_pixbuf: assertion 'GTK_IS_IMAGE (image)' failed

Basically a lot of errors loading theme icons with unrecognized format and assertion image fails.
The session folder is empty but I believe it dumps data with a logout.
I don't think this log is any helpful… sad

Let me know if I can check other places for logs or any other ideas, please.

EDIT: That's strange that when I change Icon sets in Appearance Settings e.g. from Tango to Monochrome some of them restores (like the desktop Home and Filesystem)
Appearance Settings

Re: debian after full upgrade theme icons missing

Try reinstalling the librsvg package and updating your mime database:

update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime

If this doesn't help, can you post back your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file (if one exists) and /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc (if one exists).

And finally, create a new user and log in as that user. That will help you to see if its a system problem or a user-specific problem.

Re: debian after full upgrade theme icons missing

I appreciate your input very much, ToZ. Thank you for that.
However I already resolved the icons issue and I am not exactly sure how.
I simply reviewed packages that I had installed on my system and purged almost all non-crucial one (including XFCE4 stuff) leaving only base system in place.
Then I have rebooted my box, deborphaned the remnants and started installing only those debs which I really require.
That leaded me to have XFCE with no bugs again.

I'm sorry that I gave up investigating the real root cause of this issue but I found it more appropriate to clean my box, specifically before the New Year. ;-)

Thanks for the great desktop environment and hope to stay on the forums active (but due to problems NOT) :-)

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! (-:
