xfce loads to gray screen

so, lately my computer has decided to start displaying a gray screen with psensor after boot.  I don't have a lot of exp with x windows so I'm not sure what to check. I know xfce is running because env shows a xdg session cookie and ps aux shows several xfce apps running. I've googled and searched this forum and I'm not really finding anything. Can someone point me down the right road to figure out what happened to my desktop? i should mention when I tried to take the screen shot below, the xfce screenshot app popped up so... clearly something is working. oh, and I did a ps aux | grep DM and the only thing that came up was lightdm. I'd appreciate any help and thanks in advance!

Re: xfce loads to gray screen

Do you have no - or a solid color - image selected for your desktop background?

Re: xfce loads to gray screen

no. it's a blue xfce background. Or it used to be. There're no panels or anything either. It's kind of weird.

Try changing to a different console with ^Alt-F2, logging in as yourself and looking at ~/.xsession-errors.  You might find something interesting, although I don't know, right now, what it would be.
