I am not sure this fits in this section. Please move otherwise.
I am using Xfce 4.10 and Debian sid.
I am trying to register magnet uri handler in Firefox. Let's call the handler (program) X.
X's .desktop file has this entry "Mimetype=x-scheme-handler/magnet;" however Firefox (iceweasel) can't seem to recognize this. I have tried several suggestion found on the net regarding gconftool but none works.
Do you have any idea how to make it work?
PS: I know that I can manually choose the path to the binary inside firefox, but I don't want that. I am sure there is a better way.

Xubuntu 13.10 here. Using transmission. Have the same Mimetype entry in the desktop file. In Firefox->Preferences->Applications, I also have an entry:
- Content Type = magnet
- Action = Use transmission-gtk
To get this entry there, I basically did this (important part was to check the "do this automatically" box).
Now when I click on a magnet link, it opens it automatically in transmission.
Do you have the magnet content type defined in Firefox?

No.
Like I said I want it to automatically present me with a list of known apps that can handle this URI. Like it does when you click on a .torrent file (MimeType=application/x-bittorrent;)
xdg-open magnet:foo
Doesn't handle this either FYI. It says something about unknown uri.
