Cannot start any terminal window after upgrade??

Hello,

I recently upgraded from a custom version of Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 std.

I have found that when I attempt to start any type of terminal window the window appears for a brief second and then disappears, I see the bash process on the task manager do the same thing. There is text on the terminal window but I cannot read it because the window goes away too fast.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Terminal Emulator from the Ubuntu Software Center. This briefly caused me some major problems with the desktop function but I was able to fix them by reinstalling xfce programs using the Synaptic Package Manager.

What might the reason be for not being able to start a terminal window? I would like to repair if possible!

What was "custom" about your 12.04 install?

Are you running Xubuntu or Ubuntu with Xfce?

Are there any error messages in the log files (~/.xsession-errors or ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log) when you try to run xfce4-terminal?

One further thing you can try is to install xterm and run it to see if it works (if not, probably something wrong with your shell's config files). If it does run, then run "xfce4-terminal -H" to see if you can get a better look at the error message.

First, I am relatively new to Linux although I am an engineer but have not used unix in a while but have used it before.

The version of Linux I have was specially configured to run a set of engineering software I wanted to use that are only available on Linux. I got it from here:

This is the information about the distribution from the web page:

So does that make me an XUbuntu user or a Ubuntu with Xfce user?

Everything worked fine until the system prompted me to upgrade to 14.04 and I did so. There was no major errors reported during the install that I was aware of.

I have tried to run XTerm, and Xfce Terminal but the same thing happens.

Ok I noticed that in the .startxfce4.log file there is a line that is added each time I try to run the Terminal Emulator but not the other terminals:

(gnome-terminal:4310): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_settings_get: the format string may not contain '&' (key 'monospace-font-name' from schema 'org.gnome.desktop.interface'). This call will probably stop working with a future version of glib.

Do you know what this is or if it needs to be addressed?

That error message is coming from gnome-terminal not xfce4-terminal (I guess this distro uses gnome-terminal instead of xfce4-terminal). But since you're getting the same error with xterm, I believe there is an issue with your shell startup files. I will assume that you are using the bash shell.

Can you post back the contents of the following files (note: please use code tags as noted here). You may need to open them with gedit or mousepad or leafpad depending on which editor you have installed, to view them:

~/.bashrc
~/.bash_profile
~/.profile
/etc/bash.bashrc

...Note: ~ denotes your home directory.

Lets see if there is something in one of those files that is causing it to error out.
