xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

I am using 12.04 LTS and I have noticed recently
that my weather plugin app ( xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 )
is not working. ( http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel- … her-plugin )

I thought I read somewhere about a bug and that they had a fix
for Trusty ( https://launchpad.net/xfce4-weather-plugin )
but I don't see one for Precise 12.04

Anybody know if there is a fix for this for 12.04 LTS?

Thanks

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

There's a complete list of available versions, sorted by distro here: https://launchpad.net/xfce4-weather-plugin/+packages and the most recent one listed for Precise is 0.7.4-5.  If you need the newest version, you seem to have two choices: you can either download the source and compile it yourself, or you can upgrade to a more recent version of Ubuntu.

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

I downloaded 0.7.4-5 from here:
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/amd6 … n/download

but when I went to let ubuntu software center install, it said that
a latter version was installed , which is 0.8.3

When I went into synaptic to remove 0.8.3
it wants to also remove xfce4-goodies 4.8.2

If I let synaptic remove xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 & also
the xfce4-goodies, won't that might screw up something else?

The version with the latest update is 0.8.3-7.  It's highly unlikely that 0.7.4-5 would still work.  As Precise is a LTS, your best bet is probably to go over to the Ubuntu forum and ask that it be packaged for you.

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

Shakebake: Did compiling the latest version fail? What was the issue, some kind of dependency that you were unable to install?

If nothing else works, Ubuntu 14.04 is also a LTS; installing that would likely mean that newer versions would be installable (my version of Mint is based on it, and I did not have to compile this app in order to get the newer version).

MDM

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

@MountainDewManiac

For some reason, I have xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 on this machine.
I downloaded 0.7.4-5 from here:
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/amd6 … n/download

I then tried to install it using Ubuntu Software Center, but it told me that I had
a latter version ( 0.8.3 ) and it would not install it.

I went into synaptic to try to remove 0.8.3, but it also wants to remove xfce4-goodies 4.8.2
along with 0.8.3. I am afraid if I do that, it might mess something up.

I want to upgrade to 14.04 sometime, but I will have to do a complete fresh install ( 12.04 to 14.04 ) as
I have heard to many horror stories about simply hitting the upgrade button on the update manager.
That will take a lot of time re-installing all the software and settings I have....simply don't have the time right now.

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

As Sideburns mentioned a couple of posts ago, installing an older version than what you already have is not likely to fix a recent bug.

Synaptic Package Manager might only have been telling you that you were about to remove the meta-package, not all of the individual apps (IDK). But that is moot because of the above.

I thought the whole point of using a vanilla Ubuntu or one of its derivitives (as opposed to a distro that was built on Ubuntu, such as Mint, Ultimate Edition, et cetera) was because of the ease/simplicity of updating to a newer version with that Upgrade Distro(?) button - but that's neither here nor there, and I'm probably wrong in my assumption anyway.

I have in the past (NOT with this specific app, because I had no need due to compatible versions) had success when trying to install a .deb of an app I downloaded that was meant for a more recent version of my OS, but I realized that if I was unsuccessful I would have had to uninstall it (using the option when running the .deb a second time) and then reinstall the one in Synaptic Package Manager, so I cannot really recommend that to others.

What I would recommend is that you read this thread:
https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=9163
(I did not, initially, realize that you had started a separate thread about the app.)

There were several solutions mentioned in it, including instructions on downloading & compiling this app yourself that ToZ posted which are dead-easy (IOW, just cut and paste into a terminal window), an alternate app that I posted about for those who are still having trouble or who just want to try a different weather app, and various other posts. Hopefully, something within that thread will allow you to "see the weather" once again.

Regards,
MDM

EDIT: If you choose to try following ToZ's instructions for compiling this app yourself, I do not expect you to run into any trouble - but if you do, or need some clarification beforehand, he seems to be one of the most helpful users (staff, actually) here and would probably be willing to answer your questions. While I cannot guarantee that compiling your own copy of xfce4-weather-plugin will solve your issue, I think that it will unless there ends up being some kind of conflict between dependencies that the app requires and ones that you have installed on your system - and I wouldn't expect that to be the case with this app.

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

I don't believe that compiling the Xfce weather plugin will work for the version of Xfce (4.8) that shipped with Ubuntu 12.04 - there are too many dependency changes. You can wait until the fix gets back-ported to 12.04 but I'm not sure how long you'll have to wait for canonical to back-ported it (See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1377612 for a status update).

As mentioned earlier and in the other thread that MDM links to, you have 2 choices:

1. The My Weather Indicator - there appears to be a precise version available at this PPA.

2. A weather script that I wrote that uses the genmon plugin. See https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=32050#p32050.

@ToZ

Actually I installed 4.10 some months ago.
This might be why I have the weather-plugin version 0.8.3 on this machine,
but don't know.

Do you recall which PPA you used to upgrade Xfce? If not, run this command in a terminal window and post back the results:

apt-cache policy xfce4-weather-plugin

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

Just noticed that you won't be able to update the weather-plugin because it requires xfce4-panel 4.11 which isn't available in any of the 4.1x PPAs that exist.

You can install the my-weather-indicator by following these procedures:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install my-weather-indicator

...then firing it up via:

/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/my-weather-indicator/bin/my-weather-indicator

...then completing the initial configuration screen.

Re: xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 not working in 12.04 LTS

Hey shakebake, if you choose to install my-weather-indicator, after you install/run it, can you check after a couple minutes and see if xfce4-weather-plugin suddenly gets data again?

@Toz
here is command:  apt-cache policy xfce4-weather-plugin
(also, how do you post with the letters as white and a black background?)

xfce4-weather-plugin:

  Candidate: 0.8.3-0ubuntu1~ppa0.12.04.1

I installed my-weather-indicator and it is working, thanks for instructions and program.

@MountainDewManiac
It has been 20 minutes since installing my-weather-indicator and
xfce4-weather-plugin 0.8.3 is still not getting any data.
I also tried to manually refresh.

Enclose the text in CODE tags, just like you would with QUOTE, B (bold), et cetera. It'll look like this (spaces added so the tags display instead of function):
[C OD E]Text displayed correctly, with a monospace font[/C OD E]
When the spaces are removed, you see:

Text displayed correctly, with a monospace font

It's also a good way to display links if you do not wish them to be "live."

Okay. Thanks for reporting back. I was wondering if one of the files that are installed/updated from installing that app might also be used by xfce4-weather-plugin to deal with / point to the weather data provider, but I guess not. Mine has been working since I installed the alternate app, but I also installed the updated version of the XFCE one at nearly the same time and couldn't remember if I checked it before updating.

MDM
