Why is the terminal window transparent?

Not a problem per se, but it's not what I'm looking for in xfce.  Display compositing is turned off.  I don't want any transparency because I want max speed.

I searched this forum but all the relevant threads I found were old.  I'm running mint 17 xfce, using xfce 4.10 ... I think ... I'm using lxde on my netbook right now.

I don't know why yours is that way, but unless something is really weird you can change that by opening a terminal, clicking Edit > Preferences > Appearance, then click the Background button (which should read "Transparent background") to select one of the other options.

It can be a myth that compositing slows down a computer. The opposite can often happen as compositing moves the most of the graphics work such as drawing windows from the cpu to the gpu.

I agree, but doesn't that depend upon the gpu?  This laptop has integrated intel video with shared memory.  It's always been much faster with display compositing turned off.
