Updated from 4.8: lost date & time (also stuck on 4.1)

Running 12.04 lts

This was the guide I used:

To upgrading XFCE 4.8 to XFCE 4.10 in Xubuntu 12.04, Add the PPA XFCE 4.10, with following commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

First attempt wouldn't work...... second attempt, I received a big download, but was still on 4.8.
Dino99 on ubuntu forums suggested ppa:jblgf0/xfce-4.10-1

It worked but I lost my date and time.
Tried unlock, and adding orange but just the same - execute or remove.

Note: date and times displays as normal in ubuntu

So tried https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+arc … /xfce-4.12

This downloads, but on reboot I'm still on 4.1.
still no date & time
also...... the default web browser is never registered...... every time I load a browser it asks me which one.
BTW..... this has always been a feature of xfce on my box.

also..... have noticed some strange windows behaviour since the update: locked layers, and no 'minimise/close' buttons.

I figured I'd better join the xfce forum.

Sounds like its crashing. If you look at the main PPA page, there is a message at the beginning about linking panel library files:

ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.4 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.3

...you may need to run that with root privileges to get it to work.

Note: date and times displays as normal in ubuntu

Can you show exactly what steps you followed? What commands you entered and what the results were?
What does the following return:

xfce4-about -V

Not sure what "locked layers" are, but if you are missing your minmize/close buttons, make sure that xfwm4 is running. Alt+F2 then:

xfwm4 --replace

Welcome. One thing to keep in mind: PPAs are user-created unofficial repositories. If things aren't working properly, you'll probably need to discuss this directly with the PPA owner.

Thanks for the response.

1. Preferred browser..... of course, I hadn't selected it in Preferred Apps... it was the chrome alert offering 'select as default' that had confused me.
Annoyingly it still appears when I load chrome..... I checked chrome settings just now and it shows it set as default.
Maybe next time when I load it, it will be gone...... it's not a major issue.

2. About:

3. Link panel library files: 

 ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.4 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.3
ln: failed to create symbolic link `/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.3': Permission denied

Ran sudo:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.4 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxfce4panel-1.0.so.3

4. Window layering locked...... I meant that windows wouldn't come to the fore & close buttons gone.
If it happens again I'll try the Alt F2 fix.

5. PPA source:
The last PPA used was the one offered on the developer page that you linked to.

6.What happened - from the beginning?

I was on 4.8, and decided to risk updating:
I tried 

ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10

remained on 4.8

tried 

ppa:jblgf0/xfce-4.10-1

This put me on 4.1
It had downloaded the data..... I rebooted..... 4.1, but no date & time, and execute/remove dialogue showing.
clicking execute..... it said
"The plugin restarted more than once in the last 60 seconds. If you press Execute the panel will try to restart the plugin otherwise it will be permanently removed from the panel."

tried 

ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12

This still left me on 4.1 (after downloading the data).

I've just tried again to add date and time, and got the same execute remove box.

I think that covers everything smile

1. In case there is some confusion, there is no Xfce 4.1 - its actually 4.10 (4.10 is a newer version that 4.8).

2. Chrome as default browser - I recall reading about a bug that prevents Chrome from being default in Xfce on older versions of Xfce. I've never used Chrome, so I don't know the fix. Perhaps search around to see if you can find the answer.

3. If the datetime plugin is not working, this is probably an issue with the PPA that you are using and as such, you should contact the PPA owner and discuss with him/her. Remember, these are unofficial repositories that you are using.

4. The ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12 repository doesn't have packages for Ubuntu precise-based versions. The PPAs don't take into account the version of Xfce that you have, but the distro version. And currently, there are no packages available for 12.04LTS. Hence, why its not working.

1. Yes.... it did seem a touch strange vis a vis 4.8 to 4.1x

2. Thanks for clarifying that this (chrome issue) is a known problem.
It's been an annoyance, but nothing more than that.

3. The date time issue is more annoying, particularly as I lost it whilst trying to update.
On top of that, the concern is whether other issues lie in wait.

4. I guess I need to get a handle on whether my system can take the ubuntu upgrade.... presumably, everything will be sorted thereafter.

You might have an ~/.xsession-errors file. If so, look at the end of that file right after you try to add the datetime plugin to the panel - it might display some sort of error message to indicate what the issue is. If you don't have this file, you can try running xfce4-panel in debugging mode to help identify the issue.

Sorry ToZ....... too late...... I've successfully purged 4.1, and reverted to 4.8.

Everything seems okay.... I was able to add date & time back into the panel. smile

I'm now considering whether I should risk upgrading to 14.04.
I believe Xubuntu XFCE would auto upgrade at the same time.... am I right?
I'm also hoping my mail reader will still be Evolution.

I'd end up with a slower ubuntu system, but my hope is that it will still offer the option of logging into 2D (as it does now).
I currently use 2D as a bakup, in case XFCE glitches (from time to time it does..... then when I next boot into it, it's fine).

This is my system:

Laptop: emachines E644
OS: 64 bit 12.04 LTS - XFCE 4.8
Processor: AMD C-50 dual core
Memory: 2.7 GiB
Disk: 370GB
AMD Radeon HD6250
VESA: Wrestler

What do you think?
It would mean that I would benefit from XFCE incremental upgrades.

Is Xubuntu 14.04 still as fast as 12.04?

Yes, I've started a thread.

RE live cd..... that's not a bad idea, though I don't think it fits on a cd these days..... image size is 1Gb now.

Using Alt F2, just tried:

xfwm4 --replace

It worked perfectly

USB flash drives are cheap, and most computers can be made to boot from them.

Mine won't, and my optical drive is pooched <WEEPS> - so, somewhere on the Mint forum is a thread explaining how to download a live .ISO file to your computer and boot from it where it sits, lol. I had an old (unsupported version) Mint partition beside my current one, stuck the .ISO on my current partition/version, did some "linux magic," the .ISO appeared in my Grub menu at next reboot, I picked it, and <BAM> was in the live .ISO.

In my case, I did it so that I could actually install the newer version of my distro onto a partition without needing to use some form of removable media, which was no longer an option. But I suppose it makes for a nice "clean distro" if one ever has a need - with the caveat that they would have to be able to reach their Grub menu - for troubleshooting or to work on their installed distro from outside it. As a bonus... I have never had a distro installation go so quickly, lol; I realize that our hard drives are faster than USB (2.0, at least) drives and optical media, but I was expecting a performance hit due to the fact that it was reading from one part(ition) of my hard drive and writing to another part(ition) on the same hard drive.

Probably not wildly useful, but you never know.

I really need to configure a USB for this task.... it's a good tip.
I think I shall do that before trying 14.04.

At the mo.. I've just used FSlint to discover I had 38 kernels installed.
Just removed them now..... it solved a failure to reset - I was having to switch off to reboot.
Reset is much faster.

Still no sound though.
It plays the drum roll at login, but as soon as I load xubuntu xfce it goes (same prob with ubuntu).

pulse audio monitor bar shows the sound is playing - it's jumping around nicely.

No configuration changes make it work, neither in pulse nor sound setting panels.
It only exits via external speakers (but it's a laptop).

Something must be conflicting when xubuntu loads.

Anybody any ideas?

Just an update on this situation.

I had to use it twice in a row, when booting.
Then this morning XFCE booted correctly.

It's hard to discern what had changed.

Either way, it's now not a major problem, because of the quick fix.
However, I was just wondering if this happens to everybody from time to time?

It happened to me, once, about 3½ years ago. I wasn't sure what I did to cause Xfce's window manager to crash; IIRC, I had a bunch of things running - including a web browser with around 200 tabs opened - that had maxed out my CPU usage, RAM usage, and even my swap usage was over 80%. It was a substandard (like many of them) HP laptop that used to run its CPU core temperatures up to around 180°F when pushed, so I just figured that I "broke" it.

Other than that time, no.

Damn!

On todays reboot, it happened again.
It's easy.
Alt F2 has the command in memory.
I just hit enter, and it's all restored.

Clearly I'v got to look at upgrading..... but I've got a whole load of teams on my 'lack of int. speaker sound after desktop load'.

I was all set to drop it last night, when I hit the pillow...... but today I got some work done, and only looked at the feeds after that.
That's a better way of working smile

I'm not gonna drag XFCE into prob....... there's enough on it already.

including my latest tests, as requested by the pulseaudio chaps.

Leaving that aside....

What do we do about the failure of XFCE to load correctly?

What's annoying is that it's not consistent!

Okay...... I'm clicking session load, last used session, which will have perhaps different progs loaded in the last used session.
Should that change something?
Does XFCE finish loading, and then load 'last used progs'?

If so.... it shouldn't change anything.
I can see as the first progs auto-load..... their menu bar is wrong; alors Alt F2 smile

In the past, I know I've tried rebooting to a different session, with the same problem.
Before I knew the Alt F2 trick, I'd revisit 2D or 3D...... and when I'd come back, XFCE would work.

Jeez.... I'm an engineer..... but it's like a wayward youth: "Aw sorry.... I'm gonna be fine now... and a few days later, he's off again."

I find that sometimes the session saving feature gets corrupted. This was more the case in 4.10 than in 4.12. Clearing out the sessions and re-creating them fixed the corruption for me when I used saved sessions. These days I very rarely log out (maybe once every week or two - usually for a kernel update) that I don't bother with it any more. I just re-load the apps I need every once or twice a week that I actual log in.

Had a look in /cache/sessions and removed a couple of sessions.

That worked fine... they were gone next time.

I created a new session, and no problems.
I'll create a new session every boot, and see if the desktop problem arises.
