Suspend won't wake up anymore

Had Manjaro XFCE 0.8.11 running and never problems with suspend mode, but problems with other programs forced me to  make an new install to 0.8.13, still with 32bit.

Xfce4-power-manager  1.4.4-1 now has following problem:

When manually going to suspend mode or if the lid of the laptop gets closed, the system goes into suspend mode, but when opening the lid, or pushing the power button, the screen stays off. No chance to get it on again. So I only can push the power button for several seconds, until the power goes completely off. No good. At the moment I switched off the power manager.

Power down goes normally. Reboot goes normally. Only suspend doesn't work. No change with different kernels.

Any proposals?

Re: Suspend won't wake up anymore

Hello and welcome.

Manjaro uses light-locker to lock the screen, does it not? IIRC, there were some issues with light-locker/xfce4-power-manager integration.

I would suggest upgrading xfce4-power-manager. It is currently at 1.5.2 and a lot of issues with display management, blanking and light-locker integration have been fixed in the 1.5 series.

Or, as a potential workaround, try  mapping:

xrandr --auto

...to a keyboard shortcut and on resume press the keyboard shortcut to see if it brings the screen back.

Or as another potential workaround, remove light-locker and use something like xscreensaver.

Re: Suspend won't wake up anymore

Hello, thanks for the help... but....

A keyboard shortcut can't work. After trying to wake up from resume, everything is dead. Error lamps are blinking. Only switch that works is the power button.

So I tried to upgrade xfce4-power-manager to 1.5.2. While running installation one dependency was missing (intltool), so I installed intltool first and with that came the automated de-installation of light-locker and the installation of xscreensaver.

After this installations I realized that the old version of xfce4-power-manager (1.4.4-1) is still on the system. Seems Manjaro has it's own rules. You surely have realized, that I'm not the specialist.
Problem still remains.

What to do now? De-install the old version of xfce4-power-manager? Sounds like lots of manual copying after that...

Please and thank you.

Perhaps this is a bigger problem than Xfce then. What happens if you try to suspend before logging into Xfce?

sudo systemctl suspend

How exactly did you upgrade? There is an xfce4-power-manager-devel package in the AUR that will install 1.5.2.

If you installed via the regular ./configure, make, make install, just run:

sudo make uninstall

...to uninstall the package. Might also be useful to re-install the original package:

sudo pacman -S xfce4-power-manager

I think it's a Manjaro 0.8.13 32-bit problem. I read somebody had the same problem, it vanished as he installed completely new, but to 64-bit.

Just tried, but it's the same.

Downloaded xfce4-power-manager-1.5.2.tar.bz2 and followed the instructions.

Oh, crap. Didn't know that this is the one. 'Devel' normally gets overlooked.

Okies, thanks again, gonna try this now....

Re: Suspend won't wake up anymore

Aaawww.... didn't work.

Installed xfce4-power-manager-devel  1.5.2-1, but nothing has changed. Tried twice.

Wouldn't like to do a complete new installation to 64-bit, no clue if my old programs will work on this.

Any idea?

Re: Suspend won't wake up anymore

Given that the same problem exists before Xfce is even started, its not a problem with xfce4-power-manager, but rather a more systemic problem.

It may be more helpful to ask at the manjaro forums for assistance. Look at you journal for any error messages that happen during the suspend/resume cycle. Any error messages may point you in the right direction.
