Problem with audacious player

Good day everyone.
The problem is: windows of the players do not stay put, they shift their position from time to time, and I find this irritating at least.
Here go some screenshots.

At first: http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/0125ebea89 … a751d6.php
After some time: http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/022633.php

Some repositioning was done to bring window back to place: http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/032445.php
But it didn't last long: http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/042311.php

I use Audacious 3.7.1, but the problem persists for some time now. My architecture is amd64, the player is always minimized to tray via "status icon" plugin. My DE is xfce4 v4.12, my window manager is xfwm 4.2.13, my distro is gentoo.

I googled the issue but all I could find was this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/409539
But it's for metacity.
So I'm lost at sea here and I would appreciate any help.
Regards.

Re: Problem with audacious player

Hello and welcome.

There is this audacious bug report where they blame the window manager. Unfortunately, its not possible to disable xfwm4's smart window placement because according to an Xfce developer, the application should control window placement.

What I find interesting about the audacious bug report, is that apparently the window placement worked before 3.7. I don't believe anything changed in the xfwm4 code as its had smart windows placement for a long time, so what changed in the audacious code between versions 3.6 and 3.7?

You might consider creating a bug report against xfwm4 to get the xfwm4's developer, Oliver, to comment on it. He may be able to provide some further insight.

Re: Problem with audacious player

All right. So it is either a bug report, or a player/wm switching.
I'll try to file bug report in a next few days.
Thanks for the advices.

If you do decide to switch, also take a look at DeaDBeeF, an extremely versatile and well-reviewed player that focuses on, well, the music.

MX-23 (based on Debian Stable) with our flagship Xfce 4.18.

but he wants probably winamp skin support (or he would use the audacious foobar like interface), there is also promoe: https://xmms2.org/wiki/Client:Promoe

Re: Problem with audacious player

Thx for the alternatives. QMMP looks sufficient for now, it even has the double size feature that I was missing for some time.
But switching the program in use equals to turning away from problem in my opinion, so I'll file a bug report when I have some free time.

Re: Problem with audacious player

So, some days have passed and here is the bug filed against xfwm4 https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12647
Since I'm not well aware of internal mechanics of audacious' windows positioning and windows manager responses I would appreciate very much some help from the community in this dialogue with Oliver, especially ToZ's opinion, if that's not troublesome for you.

Re: Problem with audacious player

It looks like Oliver has ruled out xfwm4 as the cause. As I mentioned earlier, something changed between versions 3.6 and 3.7 of audacious, and the cause most probably lies in there.

Re: Problem with audacious player

This is really weird. I installed audacious to have a look and verified what you were seeing. Following Oliver's process from the bug report, I was able to replicate the issue. I did find a couple of other interesting things:

1. The problem only exists if you use the status icon. If you disable the status icon and use the window button, it works fine.
2. It's only problematic with the winamp skin. The GTK skin works fine.

Then I thought maybe it had something to do with the number or combination of windows visible in the winamp skin. I enabled and disabled them to see. I also checked some of the settings in the status icon settings. Funny thing is, the issue doesn't happen on my computer anymore. The windows restore properly every time. I don't know what the secret combination is or the setting that is causing it, but there is definitely something in the app that is doing this.

Re: Problem with audacious player

That's weird, I've made a quick check of available options http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/screensho … -25-11.php
But the window is still moving. I think it's time to notify audacious' developers.

Re: Problem with audacious player

All right, so I've disabled the status icon addon and I still get wrong window positioning sometimes. It's far less frequent, but it stays nonetheless.
I'm using global hotkeys plugin to hide/show player's window and I think the situation is the same — the track changes and the window misplaces itself.
