Brightness keyboard shortcut fn+f5/f6 don't work with my Laptop

Hello,

I installed Arch Linux on my Asus K501LX and the shortcut for increase/decrease the brightness don't work but the graphical tools of xfce4-power-management can change the state of my brightness when i modify the bar :
I normally use fn+f5/f6 on Windows.

The xfce keyboard shortcut editor don't detect the fn button when i try to make a new shortcut

Any idea to solve these problems ?
It could be good if xfce4-notifyd print the state of my brightness when i change it with my shortcut.

(Sorry for my crappy english)

Re: Brightness keyboard shortcut fn+f5/f6 don't work with my Laptop

Hello and welcome (your English is fine).

There are a couple of things you can do:

1. If you want to get the function keys to work, you may need to look at changing your boot parameters. I've have some success on Asus laptops with the acp_osi= boot parameter. Have a read through this Arch wiki article for info on how to test and use the parameter.

2. If you can't get your system to recognize the function keys, look at using another combination, like Super+F5/F6 for brightness. A utility like xbacklight can be used to change the brightness.

Sorry but it isn't what i want.

I know that i can change the level of my brightness with this kernel setting but it cant work with xfce4-notifyd.
I really need to ajust my brightness with fn+f5/f6 and having a notification.

Is this really not possible ?

Re: Brightness keyboard shortcut fn+f5/f6 don't work with my Laptop

I have a Toshiba laptop circa 2009 and it was hit or miss with Fn keys working for brightness.
Since the upgrade to Linux kernel 4.9 the Fn keys work every time.
I am on Arch and the upgrade came in about last week, ymmv.

Re: Brightness keyboard shortcut fn+f5/f6 don't work with my Laptop

Getting the brightness keys to work seems to be a regular problem judging from the many threads in various forums.

For me, xfce recognises that I am pressing the key combinations and the notification box shows the correct slider working as it should. Problem is that this has no effect on the actual brightness, which remains stubbornly at its highest level.

The brightness control worked fine up till Mint 17.3 so I suspect a kernel problem. I've tried every "solution" I've found on the web and none have worked.

Ok, thanks for the information.

Do you have anny suggestion to enable xfce4-notifyd with a shortcut for adjusting the brightness ?
I think that work well on Manjaro

I have a Toshiba. late 2009, and my Fn5/6 didn't work either then along came Kernel  4.9 and the buttons work.   I am  on Arch so I have no idea i you access to the  latest kernel as 4.10 works as well.
